Please read first before you start jumping me for this question:

I am just trying to understand different cultures and different takes on things and have always wondered why the British and Irish drink so much and why every weekend has to be spend in a pub drinking with a terrible hangover on the next day - doesn't it spoil the whole weekend ?

I had seen a documentary by BBC the other day, where they were showing the binge-drinking youth in England and the problems which stem from it...

Look, I am half German and Bavaria is actually where my Mum is from = for those not knowing it: Bavaria is THE heaven for beer lovers ! Even in our constitution it says that beer is bread... beer grin

But I can't remember that when we were young were drinking soo much each weekend...we were doing things, outings with the motorbikes, camping and campfires, swimming etc. Now, I can imagine, when it is cold and rainy that one would rather sit inside a pub, but what about having to drink too much ?

Just wondering about your answers, not trying to step on tows, mind you.

Hi ,

its a reasonable question . There is a huge drinking culture both in the UK and Eire , it stems I think, partly to youngsters having more of a disposible income and the fact that drink is so easy to come by .
Also things have moved on for woman the past 20 years or so, they will go out and get as pissed as the lads , as is their right. But drunkeness is a huge problem now. Governments are unable to tackle this issue successfuly. How do you ie the govrnment infringe on peoples rights ? Education is not working!!

As a now drinker ,I don't frequent pubs or clubs and am so happy not too thumbs up

The drink culture has changed in Ireland a long time ago, pubs are empty midweek, weekends are a really busy do,a recent post nailed it theres a vodka and redbull plus in my opinion cocaine culture now and they go hand in hand.

The days of having a few pints in the local are nearly gone as its a generation thing as well.

The old culture came from years ago lads being the bravado in the pub buying drinks all round while their familys starved, thank god that has now gone.

The hooligans you see on the street has to be fuelled by something more than drink, its obvious from the footage. You can only drink so much before you fall down.

Education is mentioned above, and IMO that is a huge piece of it. Around the world we are all raised a little differently, and I think that has some impact. If one house sees parents pouring a teen a glass of wine with dinner, while another has a parent coming in after a 12 hour day and drowning the pain... We absorb each scenario accordingly.

I appreciate your - and all of your comments and answers, and it sure raises some more questions.

When I grew up I did spend some of the holidays at my aunt's and uncle's place and my auntie used to give me once in a while a bit of egg-nogg over my ice-cream or some cake, but it still did not make me a binge-drinker... also, at home I can remember from the age of about 11 or 12 I was sitting in the beertent during festivals either with my Mum or with my brothers and friends and they all let me have some of their beer and it was not a big deal. And also on Christmas and New Year's eve, as far back as I can remember did we get bubblies or wine or something...but we - my three brothers and I - all turned out to be almost non drinkers...

I guess, what I am trying to say, it is in the German's culture to be raised with alcohol always being a part in our lives but we also are responsibly raised around it.... at least in my part of Germany grin grin back then, that is....wine

Yes there is that arguement regarding taking the taboo away from Alcohol. I have heard this many times that if children are brought up around alcohol at dinner time etc then chances are they will see having one glass at mealtimes as the norm .Therefore alcohol is demystified and not considered sych a big deal, however the opposite effect can ocur . It is (some experts say) determined from your first drink ,what the relationship you have with alcohol will be .

The mentality is different here in the US. We have a lot of religious crazies here, so it is not only considered a crime, but a sin, for kids to drink alcohol. All that changes when we turn 21 however... then we have a different problem, we don't know when to stop until we throw up on the floor and pass out in our mess. Forget drowning the pain, this is called having FUN.

In some other countries, beer is not even considered "alcoholic beverage"... it's like water there. People in those countries who can't drink because of health reasons, are considered non-humans.

One more thought: here in Germany teenager's are allowed to drink at an earlier age than they are able to get their driver's licenses.... I think that is one way to prevent too many youngsters to drink and drive... because the whole drinking thing is already done and over with being something new and so within those two years - from sixteen, where they are officially permitted to drink while being with an adult - until 18, when they are permitted to do their driver's license, they hopefully have come to their senses....

How is that handled in UK and Eire ?
