There have been angry scenes at the Waterford Crystal plant in Kilbarry after staff were told the company is shutting down.

A statement from the receiver, David Carson of Deloitte, confirmed that 480 employees have been made redundant and that the visitors' centre will also close.

At least 300 Waterford Crystal employees are refusing to leave the visitors' gallery at the factory and have started an unofficial sit in.

AdvertisementThe employees say they will not be leaving until they meet with Mr Carson.

There were some scuffles at one point and a main door to the visitors' centre was broken.

Mr Carson wrote to staff today and informed them that manufacturing will cease with immediate effect at Kilbarry.

In the statement Mr Carson said: 'The decision to cease manufacturing does not necessarily preclude a resumption of operations in Waterford in the future.

'The receiver is continuing negotiations with interested parties with a view to a sale of the company's assets and those discussions are focused on agreeing the terms upon which a transaction could be completed.'

Production at the factory stopped this afternoon and staff had been told to 'expect bad news'.

Waterford Crystal has been in receivership for the past four weeks.

Local Sinn Féin Councillor Joe Kelly, who is one of those currently occupying the visitors' gallery, said the receiver had told staff he would not close the company while there were interested investors.

'Today he has gone back on his word,' he said.

Former CEO to bid for Waterford Crystal

A new offer to buy Waterford Crystal and keep the plant and visitor centre open will be made by a former chief executive of the company.

John Foley told RTÉ News he has joined a US-based consortium that will make a new bid for the company.

Mr Foley, who stood down as CEO of Waterford Crystal after it went into receivership, said the bid was backed by US investment group Clarion Capital.

He said the group believed it could secure ten-year supply and price agreements for Waterford Crystal products.

Also involved in the consortium is Peter Cameron, who is a former CEO of Waterford Wedgwood.

Mr Foley said it was essential that manufacturing was continued at Waterford and the group planned to make an offer for Waterford Crystal in the short term to the receiver.

Waterford Crystal, Dell, Tara Mines it's happening all over. The company I work for is under examinership at the moment and we only find out every thirty days if we have another thirty days so it's very much up in the air. The examiner is also David Carson of Deloitte coincidentally.

It's a sad day for Waterford and a brand that is known and loved worldwide

We can rant and rave here.. But nothing will be done in this country until we take to the streets and March on The Dail..and demand that the shower of crap that is in there get out.. I bet you if Gunness was in the same boat as Waterford is now, you would see the Goverment stepping in and bailing them out.. Why ?. because they are based in Dublin... and owned by an English company.... This Goverment and banks has ruined our beloved country.. I wonder who is going to Vote For the Lisbon Treaty now.. All our rights have been dwindling away for the past few years and it is getting worse by the day.... but as usual we are all talk and no action.. it's no use stitting in a factory and staying there!!! March to the dail from Waterford and let the People of all Counties meet along the way at various points and do your sit in at the dail.... But we won't do that will we?? because we are a shower of yellow bellies our fore father's are turning in their graves.. ireland
I used to be a life long Fianna Fail supporter.. But they lied to us big time at the last Election.. sad flower

What did protest get for our fore fathers.. it got us our Country..
Just like i said .. what good is protest it will get us nowhere ..that is the typical answer.. i know things are bad.. our country was running on a false economy .. run by Banks and builders .. The Goverment was not running our country at all my friend it was them.. look at all the money the Goverment got from stamp duty.. where is it today.. ??? where is all the money they got from stealth taxes.. ?? Where is all the money they got from extra income tax.. they kept raising the P.R.S.I ceiling at every budget..where is that. ? People should take off the blinkers and wake up and smell the cow dung that has been there for the past 10yrs but is was scented with roses.. the scent is gone my friend so now smell the crap.. But what will we do about it.. We will lie down and take it.. There is no future fot the children in this country unless we put the clampers on the dictators who run it now.. who have been cooking the books for the last 10yrs..WE HAVE TO LET THEM KNOW THAT THEY WILL NOT DO THIS AGAIN...AND REMBER BIFFO IS THE 3rd HIGHEST PAID PM IN THE WORLD.. .. AND YOU SAY PROTEST IS NOT THE WAY ....
I agree with what you're saying and I dont wish for anyone to lose thier jobs but I would be a bit afraid that the protest would put off future investors

So you are telling us that if we all march to the Dail, the nations economy will turn round and all will be well and as if it didn't happen? Revenue from taxes will rise, will they? Jobs will be created by the truck load? Sales in the shops will blossom and tills will pass out with the weight of cash in them? Nurses and teaches and Gardaí will get pay rises and student fees will be abolished? Trains will run on time, the sky will be blue, the fish will jump out of the rivers, the dogs will wag their tails and the milk will always be fresh and creamy? Pull the other one, you are reading those leaflets the scruffy socialist students (AKA Tomorrows bankers) hand out in town on Saturdays a few times too many if you think it will all make a difference. The few examples you point out are very very rare examples of protests seeming to working and all on single issues. Don't be fooled into thinking it will solve anything.

Every single country is suffering, every single country is losing jobs and tax revenue and economic downturn, you can protest march all the way to Tianamin Square but it won't make any material difference; something you don't seem to either comprehend or want to accept. Britain is slipping, the US is slipping, even allegedly blossoming Australia is doing bad. Ask any economist what to do and they all will give different answers; literally nobody knows quite what to do. One thing is clear; cuts need to be made and tax revenue increased in the short term to make good for the minute.

Given that there is both a tax fall and less people working to pay tax, may I ask you where you propose that the short term difference will come from? Tax your fellow marchers roll eyes For now, everybody here has to take a hit and see it out for a year or two and then see how we fare. The last time Ireland faced an inevitable economic collapse was September 2001. We didn't do too badly since then.

Losty I agree with what you're saying but Im very angry that we (the taxpayers) gave the banks a big bailout and I wonder how many of those bank officials are getting their bonuses and our government just plays lip service to the businessmen and we have Eamonn Dunphy talking about taking a 10% pay cut which sounds admirable until you hear he earns over é250k sure he wouldnt miss it, I get so annoyed with this country but I wouldnt live anywhere else

I don't agree with the State intervening and purchasing a bank either but the other way to look at it is that if a bank enters liquidation there is a lot of businesses and people who will have capital, loans and trade who then enter serious problems, especially if their trade or ability to do so is frozen. This would be beyond dangerous if it was AIB or BOI as it would kill 40% of the day to day cash economy; as it is there is severe lack of confidence without it even happening

A certain amount of State backing is seen by some as essential to restore some trading trust back into the market stock and the positive risk is there that should Anglo Irish Bank rise again in value then it could be sold on again at a large windfall for the State. It is worth noting that they recorded a near billion € profit only weeks ago and the share price being low is mainly due to overall market confidence on the international stock market regardless of it's internal shenanigans.

Actually you are the langer here as you have in and around the zero level of understanding anything, reading the finance pages of the Star for your insider tips or is it that man in a bar that tells it all to you? The figures speak for themselves, they are so widely bandied in the media that it's impossible to miss them.

There was a great saying once; the only many who made money in the Gold Rush was the one selling shovels; you got a few off of him at this rate. Australia is currently experiencing economic growth of -2.2%, down from +3.5% one year ago; that's a flying country if ever there was. China is no longer investing in any international bond or debts issues as it lacks foreign reserve due to very low exports while all the Asian Stock and bond markets have also fell sharply. Canada did well for many years (As did Ireland); it has the US as it's biggest trading partner and investor so it will be ropey from 2009; much as what happened to us. I'd love to know about the surge of Iceland and the great Rhodesian economy while you are on a roll laugh
