I think Chinese isn't likened to Tibetan Mahayana Buddhism rather Chinese mainly practice version of Confucianism and Taoism which is quite different to the Mahayana teachings. This page seems to dive into the extent of Buddhism in China:

There are many Chinese outside of China studying Mahayana, however interference by Chinese Government seriously compromises the correctness of teachings in accordance with the Mahayana Tradition, main reason Dalai Lama fled the Chinese invasion of Tibet in 1962/64, a Tibet that has never ever been a part of China, never...

Vietnam was also a seat of Mahayana Buddhism, likewise Bhutan is as well as parts Nepal.

Few different types of Buddhism other than Mahayana Buddhism, Hinayana, Theravada, in Sri Lanka (Ceylon) and Myanmar (Burma), Thailand, Laos and Cambodia, Zen in Japan.
