Ghost Tours in VA: Part 3

Ghoulish grub
If you'd like to feast with a phantom or share your wine and spirits with a spirit, the Commonwealth boasts several haunted taverns.
Gadsby's Tavern and Museum in Alexandria is a functioning restaurant and a historical archive. Built circa 1785, the tavern's early customers included Thomas Jefferson. Some claim a specter of a young woman in 1800s clothing haunts it. For certain, period clothing is worn by servers. Candlelight tours of the museum are held Friday nights.
Miss Lucy is the resident ghoul of the Old Town Inn in Manassas. She's said to haunt room 52, but roams from rooms 50 through 54 and has been spotted in the tavern.
A ghostly couple is said to haunt the east side of the Cork Street Tavern in Winchester. That's the historic side of the building, constructed around 1830. They are thought responsible for the high number of people who have stumbled around table L-6, says Taylor.
Plantations with poltergeist
Many of Virginia's old plantations claim that a resident of the spirit world still walks the grounds.
For instance, the benevolent spirit of Evelyn Byrd is said to appear at Westover, one of the James River plantations in Charles City County. She fell in love with a man who drew her father's disapproval. That sent her into depression and she rejected other suitors. Those who claim to have seen her say she's a mournful spirit.
Nearby, the ghost of Aunt Pratt has definite ideas on where her portrait should hang at Shirley Plantation. Shirley is noted for its collection of family portraits. Aunt Pratt's picture was downstairs for a number of years, but when the owners decided to move it, her spirit objected. A “mighty disturbance” occurred, according to Taylor, mainly late at night as the sound of someone rocking in the attic. When the portrait was returned to its place, the noise ceased.
Sherwood Forest, another nearby plantation, boasts of the “Gray Lady,” who has been heard knocking in the Gray Room for more than 200 years. She is said to have been governess to a sick child whom she rocked to sleep there. Sherwood Forest was the home of President John Tyler.
Near Fredericksburg, the historic Chatham mansion is said to receive a spooky visitor at seven-year intervals. The story goes that George Washington was a guest the night an English girl tried to elope with her love, of whom the father disapproved. Washington allegedly caught wind of the plan and prevented it. The girl was returned to England and married another, but her deathbed vow was that her spirit would return to Chatham to walk her favorite path on the anniversary of her death.
Witnesses have reported seeing her on that path, now known as the Ghost Walk, every seven years since her death on June 21, 1790.
The spirit of Washington's brother-in-law is said to haunt the Georgian mansion Kenmore, also near Fredericksburg. Col. Fielding Lewis married Washington's sister and was one of Virginia's most successful planters, but lost his fortune in the Revolutionary War. Lewis is said to appear in his office, studying his financial records with a worried look. Government building ghouls
It's said ghosts inhabit the Virginia Capitol. In 1870, the floor of the gallery of the Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals collapsed. It was overloaded with people waiting to hear a ruling on a Richmond election. About 60 people died. Some claim their moans can still be heard in the building at night.
If you plan to visit haunted sites in Virginia, please note that you will also find an abundance of real people, all friendly and all ready to help make your visit so enjoyable you'll want to stay forever.

Ghost Tours in VA: Part 1

For a truly spirited fall vacation, consider a trip to Virginia's haunted places that are so inviting some souls never leave.
Be ye fond of phantoms or excited by apparitions, ye are in the right place in the Old Dominion, which may be our most haunted state, according to a Williamsburg author who has written more than a dozen books about the subject.
“I'm not the only one to claim that,” says L. B. Taylor Jr., the preeminent authority on Virginia's ghosts. “But it appears that's true due to the long history of the state and the fact that there has been so much trauma and tragedy here, with the Indian conflicts, the Revolutionary War and the Civil War.
“Couple that with the abundance of old, historic houses here and you have an explanation for all the paranormal activity,” he said. “Ghosts seem to hang around old houses.”
Taylor has compiled reports of ghouls in places open to anyone who craves the ambiance of a tourist spot said to be haunted by spirits both ordinary and famous.
Guides to ghosts
One way to rub elbows with apparitions is to take an organized tour.
Leesburg Ghost Tours bills itself as “the only ghost tour in America led by a paranormal investigator.” Tours leave Friday and Saturday nights from April through November. The tour's Web site says guides “discuss in a scientific way the existence of paranormal phenomena” and warns, “young children do not find this interesting and are sometimes frightened by our stories.”
So many spirits reside in Virginia's first capital city that Taylor needed an entire book, “The Ghosts of Williamsburg,” to chronicle them. A guided tour through the town's colonial section is based on that work. One stop is the home of Peyton Randolph, where a female apparition has been seen, apparently as a guest in an upstairs bedroom. “She appears very agitated, like she's trying to warn people of something,” said Taylor. The tour runs nightly.
Another tour based on Taylor's work highlights ghosts of Yorktown, the site of Cornwallis' surrender. A bus will take you past Revolutionary War hotspots where wraiths of long-dead soldiers are said to dwell. Then, a candlelight walk leads past haunted 18th-century houses and taverns. Included is a stop at the home of Revolutionary War general Thomas Nelson, where the ghost of a British soldier killed there allegedly resides. Taylor said Nelson advised George Washington to fire cannons into his own house. Tours run nightly from June through August, then on Saturdays in September and October.
Ghost tours of Old Town Alexandria are available on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from March through November. They start at Ramsay House, home to the Alexandria's visitors' center and itself said to be haunted by the ghost of the town's founder.
On Virginia's Eastern Shore, a walking tour of Cape Charles and its Victorian homes includes tales of The Phantom Schoolmistress and The Ghost of the Old Lamplighter. Tours are held between Father's Day and Labor Day.
In Lexington, home to Washington and Lee University and Virginia Military Institute, ghost tours leave the visitors'center and wind through backstreets and alleyways by candlelight in search of the dearly departed. Tours run from Memorial Day through October.

Why Are You Interested In The Paranormal?

Hi Everyone!

I was thinking it would be really interesting to find out what everyone in the group thought about the Paranormal... what made them interested in it. What types of experiences you've had or if you're a skeptic here to offer some balance or scientific explanations.
I will start with me. From the time I was a small child I remember being spiritual, probably imaginative, I believed in fairies and angels, and my first experience was with what I think was an Angel carrying me down a few steps (I was about 4 years old) I should have fallen down, I remember being careless and trying to fly down the stairs..lol.. I had my hands on both sides of the wall swinging myself over the stairs but I didn't quite land normally, it was too gentle... and too many steps for a little 4 year old to jump over, I felt like I was being carried by something invisible... I believed it to be my Guardian Angel. I got carried down 4-5 steps to the landing and ran down the remaining steps excitedly yelling to my mom, "Mommy! mommy! i just got carried by an Angel" and she was like, "yeah whatever"
Now, I don't usually count that experience as my first paranormal experience really because it could have been more my imagination, however that's the way I remember it.
The first time I ever saw an Apparition of a ghost, was a an old summer camp in Maine called, Camp Kieve, near Nobleboro,ME. I was 14 and one night I saw a boy wearing clothes from the 1920's or 1930's standing at the end of my bed he looked blueish/transparent, but at first I thought he was real/alive. I yelled at him asked him why he was in our cabin (girls cabin) no response, he just stared at me, through me. Then I realized that he was a ghost and got scared. All of the other girls were asleep, and I tried to scream and wake them up but I was unable to scream... and nobody would wake up for me. I hid under my covers a few times and he was still there... even pinched myself...lol... silly me..and YES I was still awake. wow
He eventually faded away... the next morning when I woke up there was writing on the bed he stood in front of that said, "This Bed Is Haunted" ... my jaw dropped.
To confirm this... I asked a camp counselor about the history of the camp and she said that a 12 year old boy drowned in the lake and died... sometime in the 1920's or 1930's.. and then I knew that was him... she also showed me pictures of group photos of the boys from the camp and there he was in one of the oldest pics, wearing the knickers and "golf-style" cap on his head.
From that time on I have been interested in the paranormal and have always believed.
Later, years later I formed a group called, Peninsula Paranormal Investigators based out of Hampton Roads, Virginia. And did what I love doing the most.. Investigating the Paranormal, and helping the living with their fears, and the dead to move on and be at peace.

RE: Dreaming and the Astral plane

I've had what I call "Paranormal Dreams" some seemed like premonitions, some were just dreams about the paranormal...lol. Others... truly felt like spiritual visitations from loved ones (and the occasional stranger) who had passed away/crossed over...some were people who had died but had not yet crossed over...
I experienced an OBE once .... well.. more like there was one in particular that I could remember more than others. I can see where it would be hard to distinguish dream from reality when it feels like you are floating and conscious or in my case I walked through a wall and was standing over my room-mate (at the time) while he was sleeping and I was talking to him. Now, he was skeptical of anything spiritual, so I wasn't going to tell him about that dream or OBE... however... about a week later he asked me out of the blue if I was in his room talking to him one night when he was trying to sleep...telling him he needed to " be more positive, and release his negative energy"...lol... I said, uh... yes and no...and told him about my experience...and I asked him a silly question... " what was I wearing? was I naked? what did my clothes look like?" and he said he couldn't tell, and no 'unfortunately' I wasn't naked..lol
So after he and I made this correlation of me being in my room and in his room at the same time, (OBE) Mr. Skeptical became a little more open minded to the possibility because he was very sure that he saw me that night,(even though he still made fun of the ghost that haunted our apartment).
I'm probably rambling..but anyhow, I know that sometimes our brain can trick us into thinking we see or experience things that aren't really there, but then sometimes we just can't explain it and at what point is it reality or not?
I'll have to post some of my Paranormal Dreams later... : )

Need A Spell or Blessing for a Haunted House?

Yes I've also heard smudging the four corners of the house but have only tried it with white sage... the Bay Leaves sound like a good idea too. I've heard of also hanging fresh sage sprigs in the corners and letting them dry out and just keeping them hanging in the corners to promote positive energy in the home. When I do a sage smudging I burn it and fan the smoke into all areas of the home and crack a few windows. I fan the smoke into the corners of closets, rooms and doorways...
thanks for the great idea!

RE: Dreaming and the Astral plane

(hi rubendario) I don't buy it either. Having had OBE's, and more recently having seen things in my mind, via remote viewing, that I couldn't possibly have known about (and later confirmed) I am more and more of the mind, that there are incredible things we can access from our own minds, independent of our current understanding of time.

Thanx Jacy30

I've used Bay leaves from the Bay Laurel, at the four corners of a house to succefully quieten a house. No specific incant. Just the intent.

RE: Dreaming and the Astral plane

I have to agree with you. Having had OBE's and/or precognitive 'dreams'.
Science cannot explain many things. This is mainly because a recording device, specific and powerful enough to faithfully imprint information like this, has not to this point been created.

If this is an anomaly of memory - we have no reason to trust any memory of anything. And yet we do.

I think that all reality exists in the brain (or deeper) alone - Pain is experienced in the brain, not the finger that touches the flame. Wonder happens inside the skull. etc. etc.
What we experienc on this plane of existence is our collective thought forms, which, like us, is expressed as solid objects because us, and any levels below us, understand those experiences in this way (but not others higher up necessarily). Buddhism describes this 'locale' as maya (illusion), science has shown that, at the atomic level, the universe we see and experience is essentially a hologram. These are hefty subjects. They require that you learn the abc's of how you experience the world. All rules you design will fit - because, again, science and spirituality have met to claim that, whatever you believe is true. This is the way things happen. The universe will configure itself into any pattern or appearance you want it to.
when we meet the creators - they will be us.

Dreaming and the Astral plane

Are precognitive dreams just a coincidence?

I don't think there are any coincidences. I think everything that happens has a purpose behind it and no I don't think we understand the connection most of the time.

Example:

Spiritually speaking, you have a very specific precognitive dream. You remember it in complete detail with all the 5 senses and in full color. A few weeks later you experience the very same dream, in your waking life, exactly the way you dreamed it.

Science explains this as Déjà vu, the experience of feeling sure that one has witnessed or experienced a new situation previously (an individual feels as though an event has already happened or has happened in the near past).
According to scientific research, the most likely explanation of déjà vu is not that it is an act of "precognition" or "prophecy," but rather that it is an anomaly of memory giving the impression that an experience is "being recalled."

I don't buy it. On the spiritual level, having had several OBEs, read a few books on the subject, and had many such dreams, I would have to conclude that we travel in the astral plane via the astral body in either the present, past, or future. I don't believe that dreaming something so specific, in color, and with the full feeling of the 5 senses is a coincidence.

What are your thoughts?

Surrender Field Investigation

Date: Oct 27, 2007

Weather: slightly cloudy, no more rain

Temperature: 70's but felt very chilly

Moon: Full Moon

Investigators present: Jennifer, Tracey, Lisa

We arrived late, between 9:30-10pm… we were getting new equipment
ready before we left. We finally arrived at Surrender Field and
parked along the side of the "pull-off" area with the plaque. We
started down the pathway, and headed toward the overlook building. We
all noticed a drop in temperature as compared to town.
We went up into the overlook building to get started, and on the
way Lisa mentioned that the circle with a stump in the middled gave
her a strange feeling. Once we got to the top and started to take
pictures, already Jennifer was having Technical Difficulties.
Jennifer used a Sony Cyber Shot Digital Camera with a "night vision"
red light feature. However, every time she used the camera while in
the overlook, nothing would show up, unless it was close up. At times
the camera wouldn't work properly.
At this same time, the same thing happened with Tracey's camera.
We went down the spiral past the cannons, and took pictures along the way.
Jennifer tried to take a picture of the full moon and the moon
didn't show up, but something else did. We all walked over near the
flag poles and immediately we heard clacking noises, like the sound of
marching coming towards us. Lisa said it sounded like marching,
Jennifer asked if it was the ropes on the flag poles, Tracey confirmed
that she heard it too. We tried to recreate the noise with the flag
poles, but it wasn't the same noise, and when we heard the loud
clacking noises, it wasn't windy enough to move the flag pole ropes.
Some of us are "Sensitives" and were sensing and seeing a few soldiers
around us and in the area we came out of…and as we approached those
areas we were taken aback and could not go further in. Lisa reported
seeing shadows moving in that area of trees.
We walked down the path back toward the road again, and walked on
the field off to the right of us…(not the main portion of Surrender
Field) but Lisa and Jennifer got sick feelings in their stomachs for
half of the field, and Tracey got drawn to a natural path near the
trees and we took some pictures. We noticed a deep line all the way
down the middle of this particular field and believe that it may have
been a fence at one point. The ironic thing is that we only got those
physical sensations in that area of the field or on one half of it and
once we got past that point it felt peaceful.
We walked back, and wanted to walk on the main field of Surrender
Field where the main battles were heard. As we approached that same
circle with the tree stump.. Jennifer felt being pushed back, felt a
negative presences there pushing her back, as did Lisa. Tracey was
further behind us.. and confirmed the same thing and reported that she
stepped into the circle, and something large like a leaf fell down
right in front of her and scared her. But when she looked down on the
ground, there was no leave like that size or shape, and she reported a
dizzy feeling in that same spot.

Animal Spirits: The Native American Way

Animal Spirits: The Native American Way
Current mood: refreshed
Category: Dreams and the Supernatural
I believe that People,Plants and Animals have auras and are filled with energy and that Our spirits live on after we die, just as animals. It is comforting to know, that after our pets die, and we die, that we really DO get reunited with our pets. I do believe that whatever animal companion we had here on earth, will be our animal companion in the Spirit World. I love that you wrote about the Totems.
I have done Medicine Cards many times over the years and there are slight variations to the Totems. For instance, according to the Medicine Cards;
Eagle: Spirit
Hawk: Messenger
Elk: Stamina
Deer: Gentleness
Bear: Introspection
Snake: Transmutation
Skunk: Reputation
Otter: Woman Medicine
Butterfly: Transformation
Turtle: Mother Earth
Moose: Self Esteem
Porcupine: Innocence
Coyote: Trickster
Dog: Loyalty
Wolf: Teacher
Raven: Magic
Mountian Lion: Leadership
Lynx: Secrets
Buffalo: Prayer and Abundance
Mouse: Scrutiny
Owl: Deception
Beaver: Builder
Opossum: Diversion
Crow: Law
Fox: Camouflage
Squirrel: Gathering
Dragonfly: Illusion
Armadillo: Boundaries
Badger: Aggressiveness
Rabbit: Fear
Turkey: Give-Away
Ant: Patience
Weasel: Stealth
Grouse: Sacred-Spiral
Horse: Power
Lizard: Dreaming
Antelope: Action
Frog: Cleansing
Swan: Grace
Dolphin: Manna
Whale: Record Keeper
Bat: Rebirth
Spider: Weaving
Hummingbird: Joy

Some of these people may look at the "quality or characteristic" as negative. Reputation isn't negative, unless you make it negative. Some of these forewarn you of things to be aware of.
Some take some true introspection, others are more obvious in meaning.

The way I found out my 9 Totems (according to Medicine Cards we have 9 Totems:

1 from the East, 1 from the West, 1 from the North, 1 from the South, 1 Above, 1 Below, 1
Within, and Mother Earth(on our Left, protector of your female side and teaches you that you must learn to receive abundance as well as nurture yourself and others and teacher of relationships and mothering. Father Sky animal totem is on the Right, which protects your male side and teaches you that no matter where you turn, it will be your Father-protector within. This animal also carries your courage and warrior spirit.

The Last Time I did these I was a Young adult (not to say that I am old, yet!)

These are/were my animal totems, I feel that as we grow, we do change, and possible I have gained new totems... (Like a Wolf: Teacher Dog: Loyalty (I am a teacher, so that would make sense, and am drawn to dogs, and have dreams about German Shepard and wolves sometimes, I am also drawn to the Hawk:Messenger, because I have been a messenger for my loved ones who have passed away)

My 9 Totems:
(East) Moose: Self Esteem (sometimes, lack of it)
(South) Grouse: Sacred Spiral
(West) Antelope : Action (I don't like to wait on others, I just do it)
(North) Mouse: Scrutiny (I scrutinize and criticize things before getting into them)
(Above) Otter: Woman Medicine (healing, Reiki)
(Below) Bat: Rebirth (spiritual rebirth, I have renewed, and continue to renew my faith)
(Within): Buffalo: Prayer and Abundance
Mother Earth: Turtle
Father Sky: Lizard: Dreaming (I dream all the time, I will have revelations, and visitations)

The Connection Between our Ancestors and the Spiritworld (Part 2)

Another wonderful dream when I was really sad, depressed and missing
her was a dream of comfort from her...

she told me the most beautiful thing I have ever heard, " whenever
there is something that reminds you of me, whenever you smell a
certian scent, or hear a certian song of a bird or a whoose or
breeze brush up against you..that is me letting you know that I am
there and will always be there watching over you..."

Wow.. I am nearly in tears as I write this for all of you...I don't
mind sharing all of this with you..but I think it's important for
all of us (eventhough I grasp that most of us who are in this group
already believe in the afterlife)to understand how very real spirits
are ... and that there is life after death.

Not until I moved into this house, and unpacked and found a
beautiful handpainted poetry book I had given to her as a present
one year did I find a page that had a very similar poem to what she
said to me... and I smelled the familar scent..and knew she was with
me again :)

Sometimes people in our lives, living or not are here to teach us
life lessons.

I always looked up to my grandmother as an example of the perfect
mother and kind, loving generous grandmother..of course non of us
are perfect, and only learn how to be parents through trial and
error. I started out as a step parent before I had any biological
children..so for me it was more of a challenge to be a loving parent
to children I didn't know very well at the time.

I was losing my patience and becoming strict with the kids out of
frustration from not knowing how to raise them. One night, I had a
very lucid dream ( I think it was seriously an out of body
experience) that I woke up, and my grandmother was standing at the
foot of my bed, my hubby remained asleep..I got up..I think my body
stayed in bed..but I got up and stood up next to her... she had a
very important message for me. My son at the time was being bullied
and I wasn't being very understanding and just didn't know how to
deal with it anymore..so she actually pointed to the window and told
me to look out of it.. as I looked out..somehow a scene from my
childhood repalyed to me from a time when I was bullied. She
reminded me to try to be more patient and understanding with the
kids. To try to remember what it was like when I was a kid evertime
they go through something like that and it will help me to raise
them right. Shortly after expalining that to me.. she said she was
tired and had to lay down..it looked like she started to lay down in
my bed and fade away..and I yelled " NO Grandma..don't go..don't
GO!" and I woke up back in my body.. sad..but glad of what I was
told. :)

Recently, doing my genealogy has connected me to living relatives
who are now actively helping me in my research. One of my very
knowledgable cousins recently called me out of the blue to share
some information on my ancestors..one I have been intrigued to find
more info on. He told me that he had visited the grave of our civil
war solider. He said as he approached the grave that a strange
feeling came over him and as he put it he said he had a vision that
our ancestor was standing in front of him..walking torward him..with
his arms reaching out to him..as if he wanted to hug him... and the
spirit said " Thank you so much for visiting me.. you are the first
of my ( decendants/children) to visit me!"

I am so glad he shared that with me... just to let me know..that I'm
not the only one in the family that communicates with our ancestors!

Thank you all for your patience in reading this..I hope you all have
enjoyed these true experiences and have some comments

The Connection Between our Ancestors and the Spiritworld (Part 1)

The Connection between our Ancestors and the Spiritworld
Current mood: touched
Category: Dreams and the Supernatural
I am very involved in my genealogy, and I have found when also doing
paranormal investigating doing research like this can be helpful.

I am one of those people who when reading a story can envision how
people's lives may have been, or how they looked, etc.

To me I really feel like I feel the spirits of my ancestors whenever
I do my genealogy. I have had dreams and felt like they are trying
to help me..I know to some of you it may sound weird..but sometimes
I think the intelligent spirits, especially the ones you are
directly connected to are really wanting to communicate with you for
various reasons. According to some religions it has to do with what
people belive in..or to forwarn them..or to let them know they are
being watched over and protected..especially immediatly after they
die.

Sometimes when I find a pic of an ancestor I have been researching I
get a chill..like..wow..I really know them!

Other times..I'm overwhelmed to see the uncanny resemblances between
my grandmother and say her grandmother..almost identical!

I have a very strong feeling that many of our ancestors want to make
contact with us for one reason or another and I know that I am not
crazy when I say I have made contact through lucid
dreams..especially with my grandmother..it was very special..and to
me aside from my beliefs, it proves that there is life on the other
side.

The fist time I was visited by my grandma to me I was dreaming but
it felt real..and it was a few dreams or sequences of dreams right
after she died.

like for instance.. she had died of a heart attack..one that the
doctors couldn't prevent or treat.. she had early symptoms, was
admitted into the hospitial..only to be sent home and actually have
the heart attack and die in my mother's arms gasping for breath
unable to speak..but I remember and always will remember her last
words she spoke to me in life...(" I miss my kids in Michigan, I
wish I could see them and be with them again"...and I told her maybe
I could go there with her..and then she gave me her wedding rings to
keep and acted as if she would never see me again" that was around
09/12/01 right around 9/11... it really scared and saddened
her..that tradgedy with the twin towers..long story...but before I
went home from visiting them..those were pretty much the last things
she said to me) I didn't realize that the next time I would see her
was in Michigan, surrounded by my aunts and uncles (her kids) at her
funeral... less than a month later. I was 5 months pregnant...
When I had gotten home..I had the most amazing dream..she had
visited me..a few times in dreams actually...
the first one was:
One was of her funeral repeating what the family did as we encircled
her casket as a family in the shape of a horseshoe, praying,
mourning and comforting eachother... some taking turns to say
goodbye to her...but in the dream..she sat up looked alive and
started talking to everyone..but really to me..because I was(am) the
messenger... she had personal messages for some family members who I
was to tell later..
One message was that to tell my mom that her death was not her fault
and that she feels much better now, and feels much more alive than
she did in life..and she really did look about 10 years younger,
bright and full of light.

another conversation I had in a dream of her was about my baby to
be..I knew in my heart I was having a girl... and of course before
she died she knew I was having a baby ... she just came out and said
to me, " you are having a girl, and Alyssa Marie is a beautiful
name, and I know her and love her very much!"

that comforted me so much.

And of course she was right..I knew it too!
