I had a look in my Geoff Hamilton organic gardening book, and nothing is mentioned specifically about potato bugs,- also my trusty 1940's gardening bible cannot offer any non-organic advice..
Generally, if you want to stick to organic methods, if it comes to bugs you have to resort to some kind of 'picking' method, be it spraying them off (aphids) to actually taking them off one by one.. (caterpillars). If you have a small area, and catch it early, that can actually be very effective.
I'm no expert on plants (except on veg maybe..), but I seem to remember they like sun.. but that is all relative to local climate. I live in a temperate climate and it grows well here, almost like a weed, but it needs a sunny spot. I have also potted starters for friends and they never liked the pots, suggesting they dont want too much drainage..
My neighbor (a professional grounds keeper) tells me it blooms more abundant if you trim out old wood every couple of years.. But mine is so large, I also like to see the old wood, so I havent trimmed so far..
I dont know why I didnt think of this one before.. its brilliant the way it explains things so well, sometimes with an accompanying video and everything..
As a newbie to gardening I am delighted with my results so far. We have had a lot of rain here lately and have not been able to plant as much as I want to. But my garden looks beautiful!
I get so excited as something else sprouts out of the ground and being able to watch in grow. This is the most exciting and rewarding thing I've done in years.
Sounds like a boxing match lol. And in the blue corner, wearing white trunks....
Anyway. Today I planted some oak trees uh, make that acorns. About 2 weeks ago a guy gave me a liitle plastic bag of about maybe 10 acorns, sprouting various amounts of roots and shoots. The biggest one about 4 inches and visible oak leaves. I am so-o-o-o busy digging trenches and stuff (septic system etc), I really didn't have any time to spare but I thanked the guy and placed them to one side, sloshing some water over the little bag every other day. After a couple of days I had a guilty conscience and planted one in a large gap in one of my more remote hedges, if you can call a jungle perimeter that. Today I decided to check out its progress but couldn't find any trace of it whatsoever. So I went to the middle of a field and dug a hole and planted all of the remaining acorns in a holding pit (my name for it), in a spot that I've sort of committed to memory. So we'll see what happens.

Think I'm going to try your plastic next year. I have hoed myself to death this summer.RE: Any Flower gardners out there?
I'm a beginner when it comes to flowers, so I have a lot of learning to do..With veg its quite simple it seems.. but flowers need all that 'pampering' to make it look nice!!

Sorry that I cant be of more help..
What do you use for potato bugs or june bugs
I went down last night to my garden and looked at my potato plants and they were covered with potato bugs.I've been trying to stay pretty natural with my gardening and didn't want to use insecticides.
Everything else in the garden is doing good other than this.
Anyone have any help for this? I would greatly appreciate it.
Shirley

RE: wood ashes
Me tooI have an area lof allotments just nearby, so I put up a sign offering "free wood ash", but everybody here thought I was mad..- and looked appalled..
I never really understood this. I often wondered if it was because of our heavy clay soil here..?
RE: composting
Nope, havent done that yet. But I have several online friends who do, some of which have struggled to keep them alive..Let me know if you want me to point you to a few websites that share insights.. but I know there are plenty of resources around..
