RE: My lilac is blooming!

Everything seems to be a bit early this year.. I am in southern Ontario.. and came back from Florida to find everything in bloom at once.. it is usually not until after the forsynthia is finished, that the apples cherry trees and crab apples come into bloom.. and then usually around mother's day the lilacs.. but they have been in bloom for at least a week now..

The lilacs are my favorites.. bouquet

Weeding weeding weeding

Some of you have shared tips on how to avoid weeds, (like plastic sheeting to grow through), but I'm sure there are many tips on how to cut back the work load..

One is timing, early bird n'all..

Another is to get help.

I dont have any keen gardeners around me, so I use people of the local L.E.T.S scheme,

which is great. I always have an extra pair of hands when I need them..

What kind of helpers or tips can you report?

RE: Hoping to grow good veggies this year

My ground has been tilled 3 times so it is ready to plant. Today I am going to plant radishes, onions, green beans, carrots, sugar snap peas, basil and chives. I have seed potatoes and zucchini as well to be planted buy don't know if I'll get in all in the ground today. I am hoping that we have had our last frost.

RE: Project: Reclaiming That Jungle!

Yeah I would. It was such a relief when it was finally DONE! (I remember dreaming about picking roots out of soil... ...)

And driving those excavators is actually a lot of fun! All these levers and directions..- great exercise for the old brain cells..! laugh

Let us know how you are progressing! typing

What kind of soil do you have?

Oh really, that works? Well I have an enormous pine tree out the back, and I have to shovel the damned needles away, as they are everywhere.. heaps and mounds of it..

So I'll try that when I restart that Heather area. Thanks! handshake thumbs up

Project: Reclaiming That Jungle!

Thanks GT, excellent idea. There is a guy in a nearby town with a back hoe and I could get him to turn the earth over with another 1 or 2 guys picking out the weeds.

RE: Hoping to grow good veggies this year

I always get so excited when spring comes around again and I can get in the garden, preparing beds, getting the seeds in trays etc.
My worst mistake is to get too excited and plant seedlings early and then the frost goes and kills them off.
Hopefully this year I've held myself back and all my little veg and flower seedlings are still snug inside the greenhouses.
Hopefully I'll have the usual potatoes, tomatoes, courgettes, cucumbers, onions, peas, cabbages, radishes, green leafy salad things, some berries and fruits. Not to mention lots of flowers too.
I find so much peace and calm in my garden.

RE: Hoping to grow good veggies this year

There is a old saying, the ansure lies in the soil. You have to say this in a west country acksent. Lots of hummas heeps, leaf mould grass cuttings, anything you can get hold of. Big compost heep to recycle everything, if this is possible.

RE: Hoping to grow good veggies this year

On thing peeps could try.
I you can get grow bags. Just cut 3 crosses in the bag, then
plant your toms in the bag. maybe some lettice as well.
You will need water drainage hole. Then you use the bage for other things. Then you dig it in the soil after a year or so.
