The Warning

I found myself walking along
On an old cobble-stone lane
Running side by side the Atlantic
Of an ancient Eriu' seaside town

I knew I was to meet him here
That dear soul once bound with mine
He visits me inside my dreams
From the place where theres no space or time.

The sun shone warmly upon my face
The wind brought me gently to the place
Of an old stone bridge with a sittng bench
A stream below rolled down into the sea.

There he was bent over the wall
And staring at the stream below
He jumped o'er the wall and down the bank
I followed as much in wonder

The water foul and of sulphur smell
Kneeling down he began to drink
Do not do so, good soul said I
If you drink that you will die.

He gazed at me with piercing eyes
A painful sorrow across his face
Rising up he climbed the bank
He was now to leave this place

We walked along in silence
Me wondered with time to think
What water have I been drinking
Thats made my soul to stink.
