Life

This game of hearts,
this lady who’s made of chalk
and belongs to two men,
this simple stimulating drama,
a woman’s cry
these groans in the prison,
these strong hands crushed under
the weight of the sea,
these kites of rye straws,
these children’s faces,
these mother-of-pearl plaits after that,
this sham masked ball,
this chess-board square,
this Russian roulette,
this full-length portrait,
this prophet’s wreath in reverse,
Job’s life after he’s had enough.
