A Picture Of Sorrow
Author: Unknown
She's set in stone and she's all alone,
She's watching the world go by,
I wonder why the face she cries never sheds a tear,
Arise dear one, arise with with the sun.
In a silent night when her eyes are bright,
Under a crescent shine she smiles,
Somehow it seems she's caught in a dream that doesn't
know how to end.
So arise dear one, arise with the sun.
Chorus
She's framed by a window,
In a picture of sorrow,
There's a growing shadow,
Climbing into tomorrow.
When she walks and when she talks,
A wind comes and whisks her away,
The leaves will fall and tell the more,
Of the fallen dreams today,
So arise dear one, arise with the sun.
There's a soft eyed girl who dances and twirls,
She's dressed in a world of gray,
While the world looks on - they're amused by her song,
And then they quickly turn away,
The world turns away, the world turns away.
Chorus
She's framed by a window,
A picture of sorrow,
There's a growing shadow,
Climbing into tomorrow.

About this poem:
I use to live around the corner from the red light district in
St Kilda, an inner suburb of Melbourne. This is a song about one particular working girl, who I would often see talking to herself, twirling and dancing around as if in a dream. Other times it would be in a catatonic state as if she cast were cast in stone.
