King Creole

From the balcony,
Daniel Fisher,
moon-eyed, lovelorn,
baritoned 'Crawfish,'

his raven hair
slicker than
the shingled shore,
laved with eve's

waves, crisply
lisping. Here and
there fireflies
swayed greenly. Creole

throats echoed, throbbed,
the gloaming hummed.
