This "spark, "love at first sight" stuff is nonsense. Looking for that will just see you alone forever. You need to take the time to get to know someone and let it grow. If you hold out for that "tingles up the spine on the first date" - you won't get anyone. Or if you do, the thrill will fade just as quickly as it came. You didn't really give him a go because you had this preconception blocking the way.
My only criterion really is intellectual compatability, which rules out the religious and the right wing.

Fussy is a very subjective phrase. I think everyone has the right to be selective. No point dating someone awful/mean/taken. You're better off staying home and watching TV.
