My line of thinking is that everyone should pay for their own travel and accomodation expenses, and not expect the one they're meeting to put them up. There are of course exceptions, but you really do have to know and trust the person before letting them into your home.
As for who should travel....I don't see it as a gender based responsibility, but more so who it's easier for, overall. Some have prior commitments, children, work, or whatever, so it's not that easy for them to up and leave to visit someone.
kidatheart: I don't see any reason to limit one's self to talking to people in their local area alone. Don't let the distance thing stop you from saying hello to anyone that you find interesting, or that you'd like to chat with, I don't. You never know what can come of it.
Thanx, 'Chieri...' and 'kid...'... That makes 3 of us that don't let 'Distance' govern ~Who is Interesting~...!!!

I agree. I am very independent and would prefer to pay my own way. And as for travel ... two people could BOTH make the effort and meet half way

That would be in the Atlantic Ocean, north of where the Titanic went down. Could we meet on dry land somewhere, I can't swim.
But you could claim to be captain of your own craft - surely that would impress a girl or two ? (and yes I have ventured into the big, scary world of the inters!) Unless the craft was origami or flower arranging ....

Oragami isn't impressive? My brother's kids love it, they have a whole flock of teradactyles I made for them.
