MermaidDreams: I chose 'is provable truth more powerful than belief' because well, if the facts are there and they've been proven, how can you deny them?
But think about it....how many people do you know who will totally ignore all and any facts that are contrary to their firmly held religious/political/social/life style beliefs?

One. More's the pity. But he doesn't matter!!
I respect what you say but I still feel the same way :)
MarsMan: I have my own opinion, which I will give later on, after a good few votes have been cast. Just interested to see which way people will vote.
I guess it's different for people depending on one's view of the world and some people make square pegs fit into round holes to justify their belief or existence or motivations.
What people believe depends on a great many factors; how credible they feel the source of the story is, how much critical thinking they use (if any), how skilled the teller is at lying, how gullible the listener is... etc.
Take the mass media for instance. We are served up the credible 'personalities' who dish out a version of events far removed from reality. This recent article from the Gurardian (link) exposing the propaganda about Syria being an example. Ask most people, they believe the US & Co. are concerned about the 'Syrian People' and that the 'Good Guys' are being killed by the evil Syrian Army. Would it shock the gullible public to know that the Free Syrian Army are a gang of torturers, rapists and murdrers and that all the dead women and children you see RTE newsreaders solemnly lamenting with their 'unverified' news sources were in fact killed by 'our good friends'. Belief that all is well with the world and thar those in authority have our best interests at heart is a way of avoiding such uncomfortable truth.
whitepaws: I think you need to have faith that the person who told you its the truth is worth believing
so if you think there telling the truth you can believe them
if you dont believe them then it doesnt matter if their teling the truth or not as you wont believe it
Correct, the source must only credible but not necessarily true if you accept what they say based on their gained credibility. That's why we have the same newsreaders and talk show hosts all the time. They are deemed to be credible with most of the public. They can sell the lie. Nobody will critically analyse what they say to see if it is reliable or not. No need to. Just read the headlines and that's the news. Nothing behind the curtain. You know what's happening in the world and if anyone asks your opinion you can give one of the versions they have downloaded into your docile mind and even believe it to be your own idea. Now go watch sports or X Factor and sure have a few pints everything will be grand...
