Hell and doomsday are good arguments for the fake preachers or false prophets, much more than the lessons of charity and good behavior.

Only the cynical and ill-advised believe that sticks work better than carrots which is why 4 of the 5 major religions bang on about what evils will overtake you after you die as if it were fact.
Interestingly, only Buddhism seems to focus more on introspection and the positive influence one can have during one's lifetime. Carrots definitely improve your vision.
