From Sunday, Bus Eireann drivers have voted to strike. This is due to cuts in certain working conditions. Basic pay is not being touched. Overtime rates are being reduced from 1.5 hours to 1.25 hours. The working week is being extended from 36 to 39 hours(poor souls). A reduction in annual leave of three days for the years 2013,2014,2015. A few other cuts to rota, premium payments, etc. Certain expenses and allowances cut by 33%. I'm not sure of the average wage of the workers but saw figures of an average of 33000. This will probably depend on experience, etc. With overtime it can range from 43000 to 49000. Again, these figures are just from other sources so feel free to correct these. I will vote for the Reagan option.
mr1983: I used to use the JJ Kavanagh buses from Tipp to Dublin myself years ago. Cheaper, faster and an all-round better service.
Yep. Here's the thing though. The likes of Kavanagh's can cherry pic their routes. So they do the Big ones, Waterford-Ariport, Galway-Airport, Limerick-Airport. etc etc.... the money making ones. Bus Eireann are lumbered with a lot of smaller routes, cross country ones, where they'd be not many people on. The problem is that many of the people would be pensioners and they'd have no way getting from town to another, say. So it's a necessity to have them.
Outside of that though, typical of Semi-State's I'd say Bus Eireann make a bollix of even the Gold routes in terms of costs.

It would be interesting to see a comparison of the different wages/expenses/allowances of staff in the different companies.
Yep quite a few people will be affected. People use buses to get to work, school, university, town, around town/city, etc. They carry around 80 million people every year which is a drop from nearly 100 million a few years ago.

School buses, that's right. The parents who have paid their €360/yr already will be well annoyed.
