I visited SA in the times of apartheid, I inadvertantly walked into a blacks only bar, and was promptly thrown out. I',m glad things like that don't happen now

They didnt throw me out but some men and women asked to give them some beer from my bottle
Went to Cape Town 2 years ago and took a journey along to Knysna. Never felt unsafe the whole time. Loved it. There was a wonderful Jazz festival on whilst I was there and some of the groups gave a free performance in a square a couple of nights before the event, and the atmosphere was magic.

Oh.....I just remembered..........I did feel unsafe once in the safari park............the electric gates wouldn´t open in the lion compound and they were not far away from us around the jeep. It took about 30 mins for someone to come and rescue us. The driver informed us that he had a "stick" to protect us!!!!!!!!!!hehehehe
Knysna is one of the best places in SA.as it is the Wild Cost between Durban and Port Elizabeth.

No Chris............it´s before you get to Port Elizabeth from Cape Town. But I have a funny story to tell about where we stayed there. We had nothing booked........but there are lots of B & B in Knysna. However, the place we found didn´t answer the bell, so we rang the phone number on the placard outside. The lady was having dinner with a friend..........but she told us the code number for entrance into the grounds, where to find the key, and also recommended a great restaurant on the waterfront......hehehehehe. How about that for insecurity in SA????

South Africa is great, lived near Durban for many years and loved it. Having said that I did experience serious crime at first hand, certain (especially upmarket areas) are targeted by criminals that is just the way it is.
There are parts in SA where crime rates are lower in comparison to e.g. Johannesburg (Gauteng), Pretoria, Durban.
But as a tourist you have nothing to worry about in my opinion, you generally wouldn't visit these areas when you are touring around.
So, don't hesitate and book that ticket...SA is probably one of the most beautiful and diverse countries in the world.
