In 1799, a 12 year old-boy sees an interesting looking rock on his family's farm and picks it up, he decides to use it as a doorstop. 3 years later the boy's father seeks out a jeweler to have the rock examined, the jeweler is astounded to see what he immediately knows is a huge gold nugget. This happens not in California but in North Carolina, and it ignited America's first true gold rush.
