Most searches will assign Deep Purple, Sabbath and Zeppelin as the "grandfathers",....Maiden, Mettalica, Prism, etc, etc as the next generation,....hell, so long as the band had the "WALL" of Marshalls back in the early seventies,..you would have seen me there,....sure wish I could remember those concerts,.....
Really though,....late sixties and early seventies there were several bands that could claim they were instrumental in the development of what today is known as metal. But to answer your question,....and based on SALES,....(yes, I know,....sales may not be totally representative of what is best,...) AC/DC's "Back in Black" wins in the metal department,...
I'm surprised that Black Sabbath is not the top of this poll as Iommi is unarguably the "designer" of the heavy metal, sorry, Heavy Metal riff as such.
