We get taxed to death now.Death could come if our government doesn't get their heads out of their butts and begin doing what's right but we both know that'll never happen.
RayfromUSA: You might as well put that in the past tense. The damage is already done and is irreperable.
It's like the last sceneds of "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" There is nothing left to protect.
Lobbyists ARE the government.
Actually the government has the upper hand over the lobbyists. The lobbyists have to pay the government money and make a compromise with the government in oder to have their way. The government don't need lobbyists though especially around election time.
Yep, there's no way I can afford to die anytime soon.

Scubadiva: Actually no. They want the private system. A socialised system would put a CAP on what they can charge per pill. The system as it is now, they can charge exorbitant amounts for meds.
I live in socialized medicine and I have never seen so much pill pushing.
It works differently.
If the present US system, you are right, they charge a lot per pill, not just for SSRI but for all sorts of pills.
Under socialized medicine they can still charge a lot. Believe me drugs aren't cheap here. But the high cost is seemingly offset because patients are reimbursed for about 60% of the cost for most drugs. That makes it SEEM to cost less for the pills at the drugstore.
But it's totally deceptive because besides what you pay at the drugstore you have already paid a lot of money directly out of your paycheck for healthcare. Whether you get any pills or not you are paying a lot. So getting the pills is actually a way to get a little something for money you have already paid.
And believe me, that very point automatically pushes the pills more effectively than advertising. The drug companies don't even have to advertise here. The system itself pushes pills.
Doctors, hospitals, drug companies, mutual insurance etc etc the whole system is tied directly to the government. If they make a little less per pill at the drugstore they make it back by what they take out of your paycheck, and by not having to advertise.
You pay for the pills whether you get them or not. So people almost feel like they need to get more pills to get their money's worth.
And remember the pills cost less to make than the packaging.

Let's clear up the terminology a little bit here.
Lobbyists don't pay the "government" anything except taxes. Lobbyists pay politicians. And the politicians line up waiting for their cut. There's no "compromise". It's politicians who jump through hoops to please the drug companies, not the other way around.
