what do you do if you are walking down the street, and a poorly dressed person comes up to you pleading for cash to buy food?do you feel sorry for them, and hand over some cash,or do you go by what a charity spokes person said a while ago,and ignore them,as they will never try to get out of their present situation if they become dependant on handouts?
When I lived in Greece, Gypsies would beg on the streets. Once I passed a lady begging, and did not give her a coin, thojugh i felt I should have. I tripped a few steps later. Fate? I ask you....

I think we should help when we can.
karma, maybe?some of the beggars will always beg,but how can we distinguish between them and somebody may be on the street for the very first time, and just need some food money untill they find a shelter for the night, etc?it's a tough one.
A begger could be one who's down on their luck at no fault of their own and goes to the Welfare office and begs for help or they're just a bum.
I have a soft heart when I see people who have to stoop to begging on the streets when according our politicans talking/bragging about how we live such a rich country.Well if that's true then I'd like to ask why can't we help our own but we'll send funds to other countries. It just doesn't make sense.
I can recall volunteering at shelters and seeing people who others considered being beggers or public nusinances asking for help.It was always was so hard for me to disgest all that.
I have taken many a person to a diner and bought them a meal cause they looked like they could use a good hot meal.I don't think anyone should be go hungry because some charity spokes person said to ignore them. The charity worker is the very first one I'd ignore.I hope they never have to experience hunger.
somechick: It all depends on how one defines beggers.

well done to you, that is very kind.i hope none of my family, friends,or ANYONE for that matter has to experience ANYTHING LIKE THAT in their lifetimes.
as a man i know we are suppose to be strong and tuff. but even someone like me has a heart. the other day in Odessa Ukraine i seen a one legged man begging on the street. felt so bad bought him a meal. sometime here in Ukraine i see stuff that would never happen in the USA.

Once, coming out of a grocery store, I was approached by someone asking for change, said he needed to eat. I offered him some of my groceries, to which he declined and went to ask some other people. After I packed the groceries away, I saw him walk into the liquor store.
I admit, I do not always reach into my pocket for those who ask.
lion131: you are welcome, and i am glad you got back on your feet again.i am a great believer in compassion and charity.i help when i can.my dream is to win the lottery, and buy a few houses in a couple of towns close to me,and donate them to the homeless.i would designate 1 room per person,so as to accomodate as many people as possible.i wont win the lottery, but i will try my best!
Our hard luck happened when my sons were very little, but it's something that'll I'll carry with me to my grave.
Like you I'd love to win just enough money to do the very same thing as you.
My older brother and his wife are involved with Habitat for Hummanity in their home state for quite sometime.I guess doing good for others is in our blood. I guess our parents taught us well.
I act like i do not speak English. Sure that is an a**hole aditude but my best friend is one of the people on the corner doing that. The government has programs to help the homeless ,,,the programs have flaws but most of the time someone is asking for money for drugs or alachol. If you give them money then it is not something they will be dependent on unless you are doing that daily.

that is amazing!great minds think alike! .yes, our parents did teach us well!maybe we are distant cousins!
beggars on the strret...what do you do? Depends on the mood I'm in that particular day.. I've been know to venture both extremes.. from handing one a hundred dollar bill.. to pulling a gun on an overly persistant "gentleman" wanting spare change... The faces, language, and countries may differ.. but the begging, reasons, and excuses remain the same. Human beings - we are what we are.. ---SoldierByte---
