beggars on the strret...what do you do? (83)

what gets me is seeing an obese woman who looks like she never missed a meal with kids half dressed and in need of a bath and hungry. i believe in sharing but i do wonder what the kids get even if you bought them groceries, they have places set up for people to go eat so the beggers are mostly looking for booze money.. i gave a guy ten dollars once when i asked what he was going to do with it he was honest and said get a bottle.. they have a mental problem and they will drink themselves to death but i thought honesty should be rewarded

pastortim: Actually, they are from all walks of life to which put them in that situation. Sure, you may have the very few who lost everything to drug or alcohol use, but that is a very few.
Perhaps I can stand up for these poor folks for a little and say I have spent time talking to many homeless people and from just sitting down and talking to them for about an hour, you know their story and how they got to be in that bad situation. Some lost their jobs due to the business closing and couldn't find another job in time before the next rent was due. They got tossed out, no where else to go but sleep in their car till they have to sell that then its the street alley to live in. Its a rough life.
I have met one man who had the IRS take everything from him, he was once a millionaire and of course made a few bad investments, his wife divorced him and took what was left and the IRS came after him for the past years taxes and he had nothing, so he ended up on the street. Actually, met two of these rich to rags homeless people, one was in the stock market on Wall Street, had it all, then lost it all and owed over a million in taxes.
Since January 3 million people are homeless in America from the huge job market collapse. They have nothing, living in tents or on the streets. These are families and a lot of them have children.
I can go on about the many who lost everything to alcohol as well, but once they realized what they had done it was too late and you can't get a job when you don't have an address or phone. So they are left homeless, perhaps working an odd job for someone shoveling snow or cleaning dishes if they are lucky for a meal. Like being stuck between a rock and a hard place.
But the Governments do nothing for them, no stimulus package for them and they are left to rot and die in an alley and very few could care less.
So something to think about when you see someone just ask for a little help, perhaps if you have that extra dollar and you can spare it to that poor person, remember we all could be there one day if we make the wrong choices. I would like to think someone would give me a meal, a dime or a dollar to get through the day if that day ever comes. What goes around comes around.

I remember not so long back, was walking down the street and a man in his 50s was sitting on the pavement cross legged with a placard saying " I AM SKINT, HELP ME OUT, I AM IN NEED OF A FEW BEERS" I liked his honesty and he got my pound coin anyway.

lion131: what do you do if you are walking down the street, and a poorly dressed person comes up to you pleading for cash to buy food?do you feel sorry for them, and hand over some cash,or do you go by what a charity spokes person said a while ago,and ignore them,as they will never try to get out of their present situation if they become dependant on handouts?

It really depends first and foremost, where you are. In North America they are called 'Panhandlers' and I would generally avoid them and perhaps ignore them, UNLESS I observe them to be sincerely needy and not simply looking for a free handout to buy a bottle, drugs or just to get some extra money, which unfortunately is usually the case.

In Asia, specifically Taiwan, those that beg are usually handicapped, deformed or seriously injured in an accident and are always pitiful. I WILL give to them since they RARELY approach you, but instead sit quietly on the walkway or even prostrate themselves face down in humility. The distinction between beggars in the east and west is striking.

I don't give out any money anymore Been díappointed too often by people here who have been begging since I arived here in 1995. They've got a hell of a lot more than me. It's a racket here and in Cambodia and in India and any other country for that matter. I'm suffering from "beggar fatigue" I suppose.

wave I was a tourist in India a couple of years back and, like my companions, was devastated and confused as to what to do about the overwhelming number of beggars on the streets at every turn. We were advised by our tour leader that a lot of these beggars have a "boss" who takes their proceeds for the day and then distributes their "wages" .. it was suggested that if we would like to make a meaningful contribution, it would be best to donate to one of the various charities that have been set up to help the needy

Yes I usually give because I consider myself to be very lucky, in as much as that I cook what I feel like eating, not what I can afford.

However, I first look at their footwear...because it tells much.

If I have it....I give it!! Actually, a couple times during the Christmas season I have taken my kids to the waterfront in Seattle (large homeless population there) and handed out $5.00 bills. Best money we ever spent!! It helps them and does a heart good too and teaches a valuable lesson to my kids about humanity and kindness!!
