Kids need more time. Don't try to be a step parent to them, try to be their friend and give them plenty of time to acclimate!!

I would never admit defeat. I think giving the kids space...and letting them know you aren't there to replace a parent is a good start.

However, if I really didn't like somebody's kids and they genuinely didn't like me........ I'd back off and out of the relationship - the kids should come first and it is not my role in life to make other people unhappy (especially kids, let alone their mother).

I'd never put kids in any REAL danger.....I just like to scare 'em a little!
Really - I do love kids and they find me mentally stimulating; I get kids learning Math and stuff in a fun way.
When my son was a little boy I'd carry him on my shoulders and pretend to be a robot.
He'd say things like:
'Turn 90 degrees. 20 paces forward march.'
Sometimes I'd have to walk into a hedge and 'malfunction'.
He loved it.
His mother thought i was nuts, but that's another story!

I wish i knew the right answer but i don't. Children reach an age that they detach them selfs being that they feel that they are adults. Let them some rope and if they get tangled in it give them some love and more rope. They will find a lesson that comes from life. When they become adults they will learn that they can't live as children.

If you like kids in general - you'll work it out. Its when you want to insist on your own rules that they aren't going to like you. They need time and patience and if you don't have that, then find someone without kids. I've never had problems with anyone's kids. The only thing that makes my kids dislike someone is when that person wants to monopolise my time and set down rules. If my kids don't like someone - chances are I won't like them either.

first of all there are a whole lot of single mothers who have very spoiled and disrespectful kids.
There are some single mom's that choose bad guys too.
If it's a well adjusted good family with a fun but disciplined environment, this shouldn't happen. When you date someone with kids, the kids aren't a separate issue. They are a part of the deal. i'd move on and fast.
