In the old days, it was probably for religious reasons. In today's world, imagine all the legal problems in a divorce between five people. Besides, no big isnurance companies are going to offer affordable coverage for 5 wives and all their children. I just thought of something. If a Middle Eastern guy with multiple wives moves here, can they all stay married to him? How would they deal with that in Immigration?

Actually, that's not true. I know a number of women who are second or third wives (with the first still in existence) and they are fine with it. If you have a husband who is too useless to even tie his own shoelaces, then it helps to have more hands around the house. And they know where their husband is when he's not with them and they aren't embarrassed by the whole neighbourhood knowing who he's sleeping with long before they do. In the right circumstances, it can and does work.

Sorry, which means its not recognised legally but it is allowed. And there is a new law here that allows them to have the benefits of a wife when they are divorced or widowed.

Our President has five wives. He's Zulu. And they are all recognised. Isn't it better to know who your husband is with. It is far more respectful to you than running around with your best friend or your neighbour (as many, many, many men do) and everyone knows except you.

There are many reasons. Think about your wife having more than just you as a husband and she has a number of boyfriends as well. Thus producing kids not belonging to you. Would you be happy with that arrangement?

This makes the first sentence obselete. If these rights exist then it would now be legal, to an extent.
Still would not want to be in this situation, too many Rachel's and Leah's, IMO. Trust me there WOULD be fighting, look in the Bible, fighting and jealousy over who he is sleeping more with.
For me, I would not want the neighbors to know what my Husband and I would be or not be doing, let alone when...
But for those that are in this situation to ge the benefits is a good thing . . . an even better thing would be to be the ONLY Wife.
If you want to have more than one woman, stay single. Single people respect honesty. Married people cheat and lie for selfish reasons, which has no honor.
Who said you can have many girlfriends, morally its wrong and you can't have both. when you marry you take vows , the vows are equal to saying no sideline girlfriends I hope this explains things.
