Well we dont have 'the tube' in Glasgow but we have the Subway...same thing really..and if a man across from me smiled at me, (then as long as he was good looking) Id smile right back ....but I live in Glasgow and you live in London...chalk and cheese...friendly/unfriendly if you get my drift
I read somewhere the English are scared of having to repeatedly strike up a conversation with someone they accidentally meet on the tube, on the off chance that they might meet again.
could it be Londoners are reserved and lonely people unable to reach out to others and very individualistic. I never made a single friend in 5 years in London.

I lived in West and a couple years and had no problems making friends.

Could propably be ..... I have once taken the tube.... didn't see any smiles .... no matter where I looked... was in 1970
