Fallingman: And in the ideal world is Tibet owned by China or by the Dalai Lama? They both have a strong claim
About that one, but at least he spoke up and wants the whole thing to go in peace. I am hoping his word is powerful enough to get things to settle down.
Well personally I have no use what so ever for the olympics in the first place, but I also don't think the matter at hand is the world business either. So why not just get on with the games and blow a whole bunch more tax money on sporting events.

Little chance of that....too many people are enjoying being on television!
Ulimaroa: I understand your sentiments Agman. Well said with respect to whats behind the Olypics.
But isnt it the same thing as raising a child, a child who is naughty; if you dont tell it off, it will over time disrespect you, as well as society in later life.
If we want China to fit in, they have to be told there are rules, limits in living together.
I dont think with ignoring whats going on currently its for Chinas or the worlds best.
Well if you treat China like a child, then show them that the world is ashame and saddened by their actions. A child usually senses disappointment well and they correct their actions thuswise. However we really do not know all the information as to China's action and the unhappiness of the Tibetan people. As for boycotting products from China, every American should be doing this alone for Americas survival. But since greed runs America boycotting is probably not going to work.

JMO
It just puts people on the map and spotlights their power...
rusty_knight: The Moscow Olympics was boycotted by many countries.
I knew a guy in the Army who won a bronze medal in the Moscow Olympics (heavyweight Judo).....i doubt he'd have won a medal at all if half the competition was missing.
There is not a SINGLE country that couldn't be boycotted for some reason or other - many could justify boycotting the USA, for example, because they might believe that the USA illegally invaded Iraq.
We could boycott Sweden because we dislike blondes even!
What I'm saying is this:
We do not want a country that suppresses its people to win a diplomatic star for hosting the Olympic Games, but it's a bit bloody late in the day..the time to put pressure on a country is before the decision has been made - not after.
I believe the Olympic committee (a pretty obscure and shady lot) has been cleaned up a little in recent times - but it was made of of some of the most corrupt and wealthy individuals on this planet for decades!
Yeah Rusty ... but you never answered and you would know why does China want/need/attack Tibet???
CuspofMagic: --- the games are an ideal media platform for the world to see injustices that have been performed and still are by the Communist regime in China --- bring on the games --- let the torch make its journeys --- let the protests and protesters be given their individual free birth right and let the media do its job and bring to the fore the aforementioned
It was far to early to let them have it.
Instead they should have given it to Sth Africa Waterdragon!
bodleing: The Dalai Lama has just announced he thinks its a good thing that the games are being held in China and he would not like to see any disruption.
Such tolerance is a humbling thing.
Just announced?
But he had a few days of media coverage slip by first!
Arlene101: Just read the news and the tibetans are gearing up for the big protest there. I didn't catch who "THEY" are, but a huge "ring" of people were discovered with homemade bombs and a plot to kidnap foreingers (sic?) and a plan for suicide bombers was foiled. Or Pime ministe will not attend the opening ceremonies, Bush was asked not to, Senator John McCain is unsur (he is witing to see if the unrest calms down) and the Secretary of the U.N. is not going to the opening ceremonies due to a previous engagement. P.S. Uli--I still like the ideal world.
Awww Arlene ... so do I.
In fact here at my house it still exists!
All men entering here, can screw, must nail and will hammer
bodleing: I mentioned in an earlier post, the Dalai Lama stated he thought it was a good thing the games are to be held in China and he hoped there would be no disruption. No comment to this on here, or anywhere else from what i can gather. Seems strange.
I commented today, on this page or the one before, so forgive the delay, still got to catch up with the posts
Fallingman: Good point. The political demonstrations are all about raising consciousness I suppose.....not about achieving real results. Embarrassing and annoying the Chinese is not necessarily a good long-term strategy for Tibetans.
Just saw a chip on telly, where the IOC Presedident declared participants in the games can protest by wearing bracelets declaring their sympathy with human rights.
Then they showed the guy behind the idea and he said it sold like hot buns. 20.000 were already ordered and he had to order more himself.
