JeanMarlow: If you are enjoying your life, then whatever you are doing, you are not wasting it. Shouldn't let other people dictate what is a wasted life and what isn't.
jodestir: Could i just point out to everyone this poll was NOT intended to dictate to anyone what IS or ISN'T a wasted life. Everyone's idea of a happy, fulfilling lifestyle is different. My intention was to make people THINK about the question and perhaps ask themselves ... *AM i happy with my life as is?* and if not, how could i improve it? ...

you say that "not intended to dictate....." I'll accept that but intentionally or otherwise that's exactly what you were trying to do and you were rude to me (calling me dumb and obese, when I pointed out that yours wasn't the only point of view and that if people led an active enough lifestyle the gym would be redundant.

UR wrong ... Early demise IS directly related to your fitness levels .. if you are overweight, obese and DO NOT exercise, u are a classic candidate for a heart-attack ... that's a fact ... slagging off at people who go to a gym (lift weights etc) to maintain a healthy lifestyle is both immature and quite ridiculous. You are entitled to your opinion, but it's definitely ill-directed.
I find this post completely ridiculous. You seem to be generalising all individuals based on diet and fitness. Do i look overweight or obese? No...but i can guarantee you i am more prone to a heart attack than those mentioned.
You can be the slim and still be prone to all health issues that overweight people are. There is also a matter of genetics...a larger person may be as healthy as you and exercise but regains a larger weight.
.. also .. whether or not u chose to get off ur butt and do stuff (whether it's exercising to keep fit or trimming the roses in the garden) .. is completely YOUR choice .. and always was .. and always will be ...

Yesterday at around 5.00pm in waterloo rd in ballsbridge, dublin, a tree fell on a 45yr old lady who was killed by it. this is definately a form of "early demise" by anyones standards and has absolutely nothing to do with what she ate or how she exercised.
if you need more evidence about how wrong you are you can google it.

very good point and what about stress levels? I knew someone who lived next to a quarry and was very stressed over it.....I'm not going to tellyou what happened next but it wasn't pleasant!
Accidents will happen, people will be born with with heart defects,or other problems, and proberly not have a clue about them, and one day, gone! However,it doesnt harm to keep the body,a fantastic machine, capable of lasting many years in a healthy condition. How people choose to do it,or not do it,is up to them. People have there car serviced and maintained,so why not the body? No,there is no guarrentee, but i would suggest that some exercise, and a sensible diet can only help, not hinder.

I agree with all that, also I believe the old saying "a little of what you fancy does you good" (just can't seem to get the ladies to come close enough to take part, lol) exesses can be where it all goes wrong for some.

i'll be having a little more of what i fancy real soon.... does that mean i better watch i don't have a heart attack..
back in for an update! while I was out it occurred to me that six of my friends (aquaintances really) have gone out to africa for a few weeks, they are going to build houses for charity and were looking forward to it so much, now thats what I call usefull excersise.
It also occurred to me that I am building a new house for myself right now, I put up just over 2000 blocks at approx a half hundred weight each, from the moment they loaded them onto my trailer at the brickworks they had to be handled at least four times each.
I wonder if jodiestir has possibly the same energy output in a similar time? whether she does or not I'll feel better about having a new house than sitting in a machine rowing and getting nowhere.
I have 2000 roof tiles to put up next, exercise is good for the body but accomplishment is good for the mind, body and soul too.
of course I could have just bought one block and picked it up and put it down in the same place many times, it would have been cheaper than going to the gym, but I'd have got no satisfaction from it, and I'd lose count

I have a Friend {a lovely lad he is }
He is a Doorman and likes to keep himself fit ..
He runs 3 half marathons a week ,,,, and does some weight lifting in the Gym ..
He doesnt drink or smoke ....
A few yrs ago we had finished work and i gave him a lift home .
On the way he requested iff i could stop at a Chemist ,but not our local Chemist as he new the female staff and didnt want to have to confront them with his prescription off the doctor ...
He had Piles from all the training he does ....
So there yea go folks .....
Every time i see people who use a Gym ,, i often wonder ....
jodestir: .. well that's the dumbest thing i've EVER heard .. people shouldn't set aside time to exercise? That's insane ... keeping fit and exercising prolongs your life .. i wish u well in your life of obesity and early demise ... ANyone that's into a fitness-based lifestyle does NOT lift objects just for the sake of it .. there's a goal and a purpose behind it ... lifting weights builds muscle and strengthens your bones .. I work out and i also lead a very healthy, active lifestyle .. they both go hand in hand ...
Well I don't entirely agree with you. I live on a mountain, just going shopping (by foot) up and down extremely steep streets keeps my legs and bum firm, same with arms. Same with heart rate.
Bringing the wood in for fire everyday = also exercise. Going down to the vege garden, digging it up, planting pulling, watering, maintenance= same thing. Many things I have to do EVERYDAY to provide myself with the basics IS exercise.
This coupled with fresh home grown and/or local produce, I believe provides me with a healthy lifestyle although not bases on a "fitness program".
I have always beem slim and trim and firm naturally and now that I am older, my natural lifestyle provides me with a natural program.

This is a prime example of what I was trying to convey as the ideal, you're wonderful EW but I may need a little more proof of this firm bum
JeanKimberley: See this is where the volunteers are needed to take care of that back for you - instead of wasting their life and uselessly heading to the gym for exercise..... any takers?

... misinterpretation .. that's what this is all about ... Of COURSE EXERCISE IS EXERCISE HOWEVER U GET IT !!!!!!!!!! ... YES!! Diggin in the garden = exercise .. pulling up plants = exercise ... walking to your letterbox = exercise .. OF COURSE IT IS!! ... A "fitness program" is whatever u chose it to be .. whatever gets u off that couch .. This thread was intended to get people to look at themselves, and ask *am i making the most of my life?* i.e. The question was: R U WASTING UR LIFE? It was NOT *IF you're NOT PUMPING IRON IN A GYM U ARE WASTING YOUR LIFE* ... Hmmm? Get it now???

WE live in an obese society .. obesity is a major killer world wide .. There are far too many people who eat badly .. and do not exercise (in any shape or form) .. to make a statement like this:
instead of wasting their life and uselessly heading to the gym for exercise.
is insane and sends entirely the wrong message. Going to a gym to keep fit to maintain good health and well being should be applauded not slandered. It is SOME people's choice of exercise and is JUST as WORTHY as ANY other exercise, i.e.: chasing after cattle on your property or whatever it may be.
It's completely obserd to suggest heading to the gym for exercise was wasting your life. THAT comment is just completely ridiculous.

i rest my case.
i would suggest you are overly active..and pushing your beliefs on others.
Keeping fit is a positive thing yes...but you can keep fit in many other ways bar from a gym involved. It is wonderful that people keep a healthy lifestyle..im not dismissing that. What i am dismissing is your generalisation on larger people.
