Ever see the cartoons "The Far Side" by Gary Lawson?

One of the funniest was when there was a diver with a diving bell attached to the air line with great big eyes looking at the ship settling to the bottom of the ocean nearby.

But really.... the source has no bearing on the merit of the ideas presented. Whether it was written by Pee-Wee Herman or the Indira Ghandi, the content is either solid or not based entirely on it's own merit.

gardenhackle: I'm not arguing that pollution is good or that I would like to see the Earth devoid of all life, although it would be irrelevant since I wouldn't have an opinion (none of us would be here to have an opinion on it).

What I think you may have misunderstood, however, is our potential to "destroy the ocean and fresh water with polluting it". Honestly, I don't believe it's physically possible for us to alter the Earth to such a degree that nothing could utilize the water here. The water is constantly recycled and cleansed through natural processes. We could do extensive short term damage, though.

we have already done "extensive damage" and not just to the water.
How can the water clean itself when it runs across cesium poluted ground, when it rains now the chemical content of the rain is very different than a few hundred years ago. there are companies making guttering for buildings that have stopped using galvanised steel because the acid rain eats them a lot quicker than it used to.
there are scientists taking samples of ice from the permafrost at the poles to analise what the atmosphere was like long ago because it was so different

It's a common technique among Alinsky types. If you can defame the messenger then the message won't mean much. That technique is as old as planet earth.

There you have it. We've already done "extensive damage" and yet life keeps on keeping on. Thank you for helping me make that point.

As to how can water clean itself..... think about the nature of water a bit and it will come to you. Think about evaporation and condensation and redistribution. And time. Think about time. Lots and lots and LOTS of time.

As for your last statement.... how can you say that scientists are taking samples of ice from the permafrost at the poles BECAUSE it was so different. Truth is, they're doing it so they can see what the differences are for the sake of curiosity and understanding. The environment had radical changes to it long before we ever got here. Believe it or not, everything isn't about us.

thumbs upAnd it will keep changing, its a living thing. What we should be aware of,is whatever we do,we should make it repairable,ie re plant trees.

I agree. We should be somewhat careful...if for no other reason than some resoures are depleting. thumbs up

the process of distilation doesn't reduce radioactivity in water as far as I'm aware and water can pick up pollution whilst still in vapour form before it even hits the ground are two of the points I was trying to make regarding your second sentance.
Regarding your third sentance if you look back to my early posting you'll see that I was trying to make the point that most of the negative impact we've made (regarding the pollution of the earth, oceans and atmosphere)has accelerated enormously in the last couple of centurys.

But I do take your point about major "catastrophic" events in the past such as those having caused "Ice ages" having nothing to do with man, it's just that I see those as having been unavoidable, where as we can avoid doing so much damage but don't, mostly for monetary reasons.

It just occured to me that I was up in wales when chernoble went up, the cloud of radioactive dust blew over the u.k. and the rain brought it to the ground, not very pure now huh? then the sheep weren't allowed to be slaughtered and enter the food chain because they were radioactive too, we were of course drinking the water and batheing in it but we were never tested for radiation, the government did however issue a statement that there was expected to be so many thousands of cases of cancer in the following 20 yrs (I forget the number) so going back to an earlier posting where it was stated that longevity was now increased, I have to also make the point that that is only for some, people are still dieing from things we can't cure today and not all of them are old .

Planets are like people in a way, they have a life of their own and die some day, just like we do.
I read some where last week about a planet that is coming to a end,it promises to turn night into day ,for a few days our sky will be lit up.Their not sure when its going to explode,it could be today or 100's of years from not, just waiting for the gases in the planet to bring it to a end.I find it a very interesting subject.
