JeanMarlow: I haven't had that many first dates. I was married young and for 20 years. Then I only dated a few guys before now, and am not in a serious relationship. The best first dates are simple ones. Go for a long walk (for example, by the bay when I used to live there, go to a coffee shop, get a glass of wine at a cozy pub type place, have lunch. Going out for the first time to a fancy dinner is not fun, imo. A first date is best just to spend the time getting to know someone.

I am reading this with great interest.
my last first date was in a coffee shop, and it didn't turn out well. (drinking italian espresso with an italian in a dutch coffeeshop is not a good idea. if the chemistry is not there and the temp of the espresso is too low)
I'll be having a new first date soon, and I don't want to get in the same situation as before.
so.... hope to learn from you what the best places are for a first date... so far, I think ZOO is a very good idea.

I have had okay luck in coffee shops most of them have turned into second dates. I am looking for someone so getting to know someone on a personal level is what i'm trying to do. If we can't connect there then my personal belief is we cannot connect at all. I could be wrong but thats what i believe.

Coffe and arcade. I don't even really care for arcades but it can be silly fun and forces interaction. I would also say a walk, but hiking and the beach are no goes for me for various reasons.
Since you are a man taking out a lady, I would suggest you have a plan. It should be romantic girl stuff like a visit to a coffee shop, long walk on a beautiful riverside, dinner at an old timey pub with a fireplace and bar and band, see a chick flick.
When she's ready to go further, I would suggest that you obtain a vintage fondue set, get good at using it, and make fondue on the coffee table along with a chick flick.
Swiss fondue is made of hot white cheese and wine. Toasted cubes of French or Italian bread are dipped with a long fork in a figure eight motion. The swiss invented fondue to use up leftover wine and cheese and stale bread. (Use new bread.) If a person loses their bread in the cheese, they have to kiss someone in the room. One thing I have found out about the vintage fondue pots is that sometimes its better to use a votive candle in a candle cup than a can of sterno because sterno burns the cheese even if you leave the lid part way on, not to mention that I once saw someone set a conference table on fire with sterno. Yes, really.

Well she's not going to get into my Y fronts on the first date, what king of guy do you think I am
I prefer arrange my dates in a local tavern (pub) in the evenings, after 7 pm. My preference is justified by the following factors: 1. As I live in Australia and it is a summer here, a meeting during the day is like going to hell. Make up will run of your sweaty face before you arrive to the date and make you look horrible. In the evening it is cooler. 2. In the evening there is less light so nobody can see my wrinkle (only one!) on the back of my toe. 3. In the pub after a glass of beer or vine, we feel little bit more liberated as alcohol helps us to relax, so conversation is easy and flirty. 4. I live near by, so I do not risk to be caught by police for drink driving.
