I have been robbed on numerious occasions while getting work done on my laptops... Because I only know the basics, Its easy for the "computer boffins" to blind me with science... I have taken to putting everything on suplimental hard drives so when the laptop packs up, and when im told it will cost "well over a 150 euro to repir", I have the chance to think weather to chuck it in the fire or buy new... 350 euros gets you a new unit nowerdays...So why repair?...
Urbuddy: I think that in general 'they dont make em like they used to' applies to just about anything electrical , battery powered etc .
I knew a guy that worked for Sony in Dublin and he told me that there is actually built in obsolence in most electrical goods. T.V.'s and Washing machines in particular.
I'm thinking that the vast majority of Mobile Phones have a 'best before date' too...

The last laptop I had broke down on me 2 years ago, It was a 5 year old dell computer, when I turned it on the screen was just blue, I never looked into getting it fixed just bought a new compaq lappie instead, I still have the old 1 lying in the spare room

Didn't Black n Decor get fined for that a few years back? The motor in the drills were only designed for something like 500 running hours but the people who bought them only used the drill occasionally and thought they were great!!!
ardera: Ahh, the blue screen of death. I get that sometimes in work. Simply fixed - Just turn it off, go get a cup of tea, come back and pour it into the desktop (and then claim a new one... lol) No seriously, I just turn the pc back on after about 10 minutes. Always works.
If you do purchase another one, try and get one that’s not preconfigured by the likes of Dell. See if you can get yourself a good Toshiba without all the crap others come with. A good second hand Satellite might be a good starting point. Then run image making software backing up onto an external drive that will put your complete computer back , also for good measure download or make a boot disk.
If you are unable to get into your current laptop, know you can download a boot disk for Vista and or one for Windows 7.
