I'm a self employed bookkeeper and have picked up 3 extra jobs this year. I think the recession is actually helping me because businesses are trying to cut costs and are using me instead of their accountants. The qualified accountants in the practice where I used to work, billed at €80 per hour, the partners at €120 per hour. I can still make a good living charging a fraction of those costs

its great to seen some people doing ok like you who is self employed
sometimes its people who have a good idea or who work for them selves that make it through something like this better than others
Check your insurance policies. You know, health, serious illness house etc. Managed to save over €120 per month!! by simply asking my new broker to shop around. All benefits remain the same. My house insurance has halved!!!! Still with the same, original provider. Well worth shopping around lads. These policies have dramatically changed in the last few years

I am doing ok, work is scarce and prices are way down so you just have to compete and if it means working 14 hours to make a decent days wages that is what you have to do,, , I used to enjoy five or six holidays a year but have had to cut it down to one trip abroad and a few mini breaks around Ireland. Thankfully I didn't get carried away with the tiger spendfest and came out of the boom with a few bob. I was never one for flashy cars or throwing away money,, when you have to work hard to make it you tend to value it more.
well still employed doing a lot more hours for roughly same ammount of pay but i remember the 80s just left school then as bad as things are now still better than then from what i remember of those days

am doing good, things were very bad for me 2 years back was down to my last few hundred savings and no hope of a job either, I was very very depressed and felt it was my fault I was in this position but it wasn't, I kept applying for jobs and eventually got a break also a close family member died and left me a lot of money so thats resting in my account, life is good at the moment
jbomf: totally agree i remember my dad been out of work in the 80s with a mortgage at near 17% they were hard times
my father was out of work for 18 monthe in the mid 80's, times were tough but we survived as my parents had money set aside, my mum also took a part time job to keep the household going, it was a black market job, may she rest in peace. I came from a middle income family and my parents didn't fritter away money and didn't go on a mad spending spree for our communions or confirmations like a lot of parents seem to do these days. My sister tokk a part time job at 14 at the weekends and still did very well in school.
kennyfromdublin: this recession is nothing compared to the 70's or 80's, people were able to survive on a lot less in the 80's.
I got married in 1977..........my rent was 10 old pounds a week...with both of us working...you just managed to do the shopping and pay your bills until the next payday.
I think the problem this time around people were used to the three holiday's a year...changing the car.....wining and dining...not having to worry about money........
They are finding it harder to adjust to their poorer lifestyle..this time around.
