That's good to know, for some. For me, though... I just don't like or appreciate the idea of a complete & total stranger launching an uninvited intrusion via an IM. Again, if I don't 'know' you, have never spoken before, or never agreed previously to have an IM discussion - then frankly I'm not interested in even seeing who it is in the 1st place.
I'd say because more often than not, it's necessary... and when some people don't have what they deem as a necessity, they can, in turn, become miserable. Makes sense to me, anyway...
Since there is no way of knowing initially who the person is attempting to IM me - all of the IMs I receive are ignored, unless I know the person and they request to have an IM conversation, beforehand.
^ That, and in my case, my fur-kids and I are a package deal... it's not really a matter of putting them 'before' or 'first'. They just have to come with the territory and be accepted, in which case, there will be no problems...
