RE: 1980's Music Only!

Huh? That song came out in 1972, mac, on the album "Can't Buy A Thrill".

Steely Dan only released one album in the 1980s, "Gaucho" which contained the singles "Time Out Of Mind" and "Hey Nineteen".

RE: What song represents u..

Celine Dion? Ugh.

This one is spot-on for me.

Rush, "La Villa Strangiato"

Unusual, challenging, unconventional, a mix of various styles and ideas, but rewarding and makes sense if you take the time and effort to get to know the song - or me.

RE: 1980's Music Only!

Here's one of the most underrated and underappreciated pairs of singer and guitarist from the 1980s, Jimme O'Neill and the late Cha Burns, in both of their incarnations as Fingerprintz and The Silencers.

Fingerprintz, "Wet Job" (1979/80)

The Silencers, "Painted Moon" (1987)

And another favourite (again, underrated and underappreciated) group of mine from the 1980s, The Fixx. These guys should have been around in the 1970s making Progressive Rock:

The Fixx, "One Thing Leads To Another" (1983)

The Fixx, "Secret Separation" (1983)

RE: Noahs Ark

Scientists have satellite and computer technology have been able to find asteroids and comets as small as ten metres long and only a few metres wide, travelling at tens of thousands of kilometres per hour, at distances as great as 200 million kilometres away from the Earth.

Meanwhile, the rabidly religious are unable to find a much larger object in a fixed location. Mount Ararat, the alleged location of the "ark", is a mountain 5,000 metres high with a land area of 40 square kilometres. The alleged "ark" is about 130 metres long and 22 metres wide. Despite a smaller aread to search and a fixed location of the object, and the same satellite and computer technology scientists use to locate space debris, those who believe the "ark" exists have been unable to find it.

Mainly because it doesn't exist.

Some will say out of desperation, "The other flood myths prove the buybull myth is true!" but that's codswallop...or should I say, godswallop.

Other places came up with flood myths for the same reason the middle east did: floods tends to happen when you build your cities in river basins and river deltas. By that argument, prove all religions based on worshipping the sun are true since they happen all over the world.

What colour do I like on a woman? Her own.

RE: Antichrist and 666...

Where did you get the mistaken notion that criticism of religion was somehow "supportive" of it? You might want to re-read the post.

For those who don't buy the nonsense of astrology...

The CS owners/moderators,

It's a minor issue, but for those like myself who don't buy the nonsense of astrology, it would be nice if one could "opt out" or have an option to say, "I don't believe in astrology. (Actually, people who buy into it should have to "opt in", but you're unlikely to do that.)

If I'm reading people's profiles, it would be nice to know who does or doesn't buy into that stuff. I wouldn't approach someone who does, nor would I want to associate with them. Similarly, I would like people to know that I don't buy it so those who do would be less likely to approach me.

I thought the whole point of filling out a profile was to tell others true things about oneself, not have false things falsely assumed as being believed. If astrology had any merit, it would have predicted objects like Eris and Sedna in the Kuiper Belt.

RE: Antichrist and 666...

Prove than an argument is true before using it as a basis for other claims? What are yuh, edumucated or sumpthin'?

There was a time when ideas were considered true until proven false. It was called the Dark Ages.

Now we know better...well, some people do, anyway.

RE: Inspirational Sports Story- Basketball Player with only one hand

I corrected the URL. Somehow you mistyped or accidentally replaced the "v" in "rivals" with a "y".

I am not being critical of you or other posters, but I don't understand why stories like this are called "inspirational". That sounds like people are pitying him or are surprised that he isn't wallowing in self-pity.

My opinion of him was the same before and after reading it: he's just somebody getting on with life and getting things done, dealing with the reality of his situation and the tools he has to get it done. He's admirable, but he's not remarkable.

RE: if you wake with a song in your head what is it ?

I wake up with the same song in my head every morning.

I use my phone as an alarm clock, and this is my the alarm tone:

Ministry, "Jesus Built My Hot Rod"

If that doesn't wake you up, nothing will.

RE: Antichrist and 666...

People are free to believe in them all they want, and I'm not stopping them. What I am doing, though, is saying that claim is not proof, that the religious cannot state their claims as proven without evidence.

The number of demons that exist equals the number demonstrated: zero.

Until then, "satan" is a scare tactic to induce obedience in believers.

RE: Antichrist and 666...

Fairy tales.

Scare tactics.

Monsters under the bed.

RE: East Coast Blizzard

Not to be snide, but as one who spent about 20 years putting up with that much snow and -40C temperatures every winter, I always smirk at people's reactions at having to deal with it when they aren't used to. tongue

It's even more enjoyable having not seen snow or sub-freezing temperatures in five years. grin

RE: Too overweight to date?

"Overweight" depends on who's talking. The normal ratio for male-to-female weight of similar height is around 3:2. If a man weighed 180, then a woman 3-4 inches shorter would weigh around 120.

On average, if you look for a person with a similar build to yourself, that person will generally be accepting of your size. Fitness can affect this and alter the ratio. If a man weighed 220 (dating a 110 pound woman) or a woman weighed 140 (dating a 180 pound man) and either or both are into weights, hockey or rugby, chances are the person isn't fat.

People who go against this are usually hypocrites who don't care about their own health or appearance but want someone "beautiful". A man with a 45 inch waist and weighing 300 pounds has no business telling a 130 pound woman that she's fat.

RE: Rather interesting

I can't rememer the name, but there is a man who sings jazz while sounding like a woman.

RE: Lady Gaga

Who's Lazy Caca? Never heard of him.

That's one of the best and worst things about living away from Canada for a decade: I've missed all the vapid crap (e.g. Hannah Bananarama or whatever she's called) and the rare good stuff too. But seeing as I've got a 16 GB collection of MP3s, I can live without it.

As for music this side of the Pacific, Filipino, Chinese and Korean pop music are as equally as empty and safe as western junk, but Japanese and Thai pop music are usually interesting.

RE: Somali Pirates and their hostages

Calling for the use of terrorism again Somalia displays a severe lack of prudence, thinking or maturity.

Somali piracy began for the same reason the 9/11 attacks happened. It's the same old song and dance: Western nations antagonize and harass countries, then the smaller countries respond with the violence while the western nations pretend the attacks were unprovoked. That would be all the more appalling and hypocritical if you are a British expatriate, considering it was England's occupation of Ireland that caused the IRA to exist and its terrorism to begin.

Somali piracy is a result of what other countries have been doing, foreign boats fishing illegally in Somalia's waters while the rest of the world, especially the UN, turn a blind eye because Somalia has no functioning government - or any power to make an issue of it, even if they did. It's also a result of other countries dumping garbage off Somalia's coast with impunity.

Just like many other instances of violent groups around the world (e.g. the rise of the PLO, the IRA), those causing the problem try to put the blame solely on the side of those responding while others uninvolved in the conflict side with their "friends" instead of addressing the core issues. The crisis over "piracy" is exactly like a schoolyard fight: the one who hit back is getting blamed and punished while the one who threw the first punch pretends to be innocent.

If the illegal fishing and dumping were stopped and the piracy continued after, then the rest of the world might have justification in using force or an invasion of Somalia. But then again, if the illegal fishing and garbage dumping by foreign countries had never happened, there likely would never have been any piracy in the first place. Somali piracy is a recent event, not decades old.

RE: How many CSers watch wrestling? Like WWE or TNA etc.. I grew up watching it and still do.

"Professional wrestling" is to males what soap operas are to women. Notice that I say males, not men, given the emotional and maturity level of the viewers.

The only difference between wrestling and soap opera are the days and times that each are on TV.

RE: Play a sad song for me

Here's a better song that still stands up after 30 years:

Elvis Costello, "Alison":

Oh it's so funny to be seeing you after so long, girl.
And with the way you look I understand that you were not impressed.
But I heard you let that little friend of mine take off your party dress.
I'm not going to get too sentimental like those other sticker valentines.
'Cause I don't know if you are loving some body, I only know it isn't mine.

Alison, I know this world is killing you.
Oh, Alison, my aim is true.

Well, I see you've got a husband now.
Did he leave your pretty fingers lying in the wedding cake?
You used to hold him right in your hand,
I bet he took all he could take.
Sometimes I wish that I could stop you from talking
When I hear the silly things that you say.
I think somebody better put out the big light,
'Cause I can't stand to see you this way.

Alison, I know this world is killing you.
Oh, Alison, my aim is true.

My aim is true.

RE: What is the current Temperature in your Area ?

Hey, it's 19° celsius here too! Oh, wait, that's 19° above freezing.

Taiwan never really gets cold. grin

I haven't seen snow or subfreezing temperatures in five years and don't miss it.

I used to get -40° celsius and a metre of snow almost every winter for more than 20 years of my life, so I'm entitled to gloat. cool

RE: real yes or no

The so-called "Real IRA" are as much a bunch of thugs and criminals, same as the UDA/UFF. Both make their money from criminal activity to fund murders and bombings because neither has any popular support nor legitimacy.

RE: Banning the Burqa in France

First, the burqa is allegedly worn to "protect a woman's virtue". The question is, from whom? That muslim women are expected to cover up suggests to me that it's muslim men who need to be controlled and their eyes covered, not the women's bodies. It would be cheaper, easier and more sensible for muslim men to start wearing blinders than for women to cover up.

Second, are the French going to ban all religious symbology from public places, or is this only targeted at islam as was the idiotic Swiss "minaret law" of a few weeks ago? Are they also going to ban christians from wearing or displaying crucifixes in schools and public buildings?

The only way in which I agree with the dumb law is that people's faces need to be seen for valid legal reasons (e.g. a face on a driver's license, no masks in banks, etc.).

Of course, the problem would solve itself if we just educate people. Then religion would naturally die out without any need to regulate it.

RE: RELIGIOUS, AGNOSTIC AND ATHEIST

Nothing to let go of? You can't take it with you because you can't hold onto it anyway.

If I where to place a bet on it, Id bet on believing, cant loose but could with everything,

No. If believers are right, then their "gods" did a pith-poor job (excuthe the lithp) of providing evidence for belief when all the evidence that exists speaks to the contrary. If a "god" is so egomaniacal that it demands ignorance and sycophancy, then it's not worth belief or obedience, never mind my adoration or "love".

Whenever I hear the religious talk about their "love of god", they remind me of Winston Smith and his "love" for Big Brother at the end of Eric Blair's "1984".

You can't let go of (loose) rational thought?

I'm not correcting, I'm asking your exact meaning.

RE: "Science without religion is lame, religion without science is blind." Albert Einstein.

Science without religion is admitting ignorance, but wanting to learn.

Religion without science is complete ignorance - and wanting to stay that way.

RE: The Alcohol Poll

I drink for the taste, not for the buzz. The sweeter, the better, and I stick with liqueurs.

Crêmes, brandies, anything. Baileys, Kahlua, Sambuca, Ouzo, Cognac, you name it, I like it. And about five or so per week.

Wine...mouldy, old, vinegary spoilt fruit. No thanks.

RE: Corporate States of America

First, it wasn't "most", it was less than half.

Second, people from other countries:

(1) know what happens outside their own borders

(2) know that real democracy requires a multiparty democracy (3 or more)

(3) tend to get their news from more than one source

(4) live in societies where there is more than two political viewpoints - in the case of the US, those viewpoints being conservative (mislabelled as "liberal") and fascist (mislabelled as "conservative") when compared with democracies in other countries
