I concur with your choice of "This is France, if you don't like it, leave!" With the increase in radical Islam and the increase in women being trained as suicide bombers, I can well understand the French government's banning the burqua in public places. If they want to keep it on in their home, then so be it.
Besides, they are making themselves more obvious to police surveilance by being profiled.
When you think about it, a young orthodox Jewish boy donning his morning Tefillin prayer paraphenalia on a plane caused the pilot to land the plane and have security interogate the young man. Well, I am in 100% agreement for not allowing even that on the plane. Afterall, if there was a radical Jewish guy or some radical Muslim pretending to be an orthodox Jew who wanted to bring down a plane, hiding explosive mixtures in a prayer box pretending to pray would be a very good hiding place for bomb ingredients.
Myself, I would have thought nothing of it to see a Jewish guy with his tefillin wrapped around his arm and strapped to his forehead praying. But for anyone else who is not aware of the tradition, I must say that it is rather odd to see it on a plane for sure and certainly arouse suspicions in this day of terrorists infiltrating our air security.
I applaud the pilot for landing the plane and using very wise discretionary caution in this case. thumbs up

No, it's to do with security.

You try and go into a bank wearing a motorcycle helmet, you'll soon get turned out and the burqa is no difference.

We had, last year, one bloke from England flee the country using his sisters passport and he was dressed from head to toe in such garb.

You can wear what the hell you want..in private, just not in public places...and a bikini hardly covers the face and body.

If western women are in Saudi....they are asked to abide by the rules of that land....as well they should....

dunno

...similarly...all of those who are living in Western lands....should abide by the laws of those countries they are in....and one of them is....due to necessity....full frontal facial recognition is necessary....

roll eyes

...yes....definitely agree with the French stance....it does not make sense that you have individuals going around totally unrecognizable.....

Plus...if you bothered to READ the report......

AFP - A French parliament report called Tuesday for a ban on the full Islamic veil in all schools, hospitals, public transport and government offices, saying the burqa was an affront to French values.

"The wearing of the full veil is a challenge to our republic. This is unacceptable," the report released by a parliament commission said. "We must condemn this excess."

After six months of hearings, the panel of 32 lawmakers recommended a ban on the face-covering veil in all state-run institutions and offices, the broadest move yet to restrict Muslim dress in France.

The commission called on parliament to adopt a formal resolution stating that the burqa was "contrary to the values of the republic" and proclaiming that "all of France is saying 'no' to the full veil."

Women who turn up at government offices wearing the full veil should be denied services such as a work visa, residency papers or French citizenship, the report recommended.

I Agree with you, that every one has to follow the country's rule, full veil is also not allowed in Islam too, if people can do this, it does not have any related to Islamic values

A known activist was arrested trying to leave the UK in a full burqa, What gave him away, he was 6"2 in a bunch of women none above 5"6. They all complained about the police who searched the group. I say wear what you like in your own home, country, and religious centres but when in a country who does not have a culture the same as yours you should adhere to theirs. After all you impose the conditions of dress in your islamic countries on visitors. A bit of quid pro quo is required if you want the respect you say we don't give.grin

It's not double standards.
To hide your face is (and always was) illegal. Why should France allow some women to break the law?
Any religious signs are against the rules of public schools. Why should schools make an exception for Muslim veils and burqa?
In our countries, the Muslims claim that wearing a veil is a religious obligation.
Would I be allowed to wear a bikini in Dubaï's streets?
Where are the narrow minded people?

WELL SAID thumbs up
I NOW LIVE IN SPAIN AND WORK IN SPAIN AND I HAVE TO ABIDE TO THE SAME LAWS AS SPANISH PEOPLE WHICH IS 100% CORRECT BECAUSE IF YOU CHOOSE TO LIVE IN ANOTHER COUNTRY THEN YOU SHOULD RESPECT
THEIR LAWS. UNFORTUNATLY THIS IS NOT THE CASE IN THE UK BECAUSE
THEY DONT HAVE THE BALLS TO SAY IF YOU DONT LIKE OUR LAWS THEN GET ON THE NEXT PLANE.

When in Rome, do as the Romans do! It's not that long ago a teacher was jailed in the middle east for allowing tghe kids to call a teddy bear Mohammed. I could never see any European country jailing anyone for calling a teddy bear Jesus! Infact it would be seen as faith!

Odysseus101: French lawmakers called Tuesday for a ban on the burqa -- the full Islamic veil worn by some Muslim women -- in hospitals, schools and on public transport.

What are your thoughts on this topic?

First, the burqa is allegedly worn to "protect a woman's virtue". The question is, from whom? That muslim women are expected to cover up suggests to me that it's muslim men who need to be controlled and their eyes covered, not the women's bodies. It would be cheaper, easier and more sensible for muslim men to start wearing blinders than for women to cover up.

Second, are the French going to ban all religious symbology from public places, or is this only targeted at islam as was the idiotic Swiss "minaret law" of a few weeks ago? Are they also going to ban christians from wearing or displaying crucifixes in schools and public buildings?

The only way in which I agree with the dumb law is that people's faces need to be seen for valid legal reasons (e.g. a face on a driver's license, no masks in banks, etc.).

Of course, the problem would solve itself if we just educate people. Then religion would naturally die out without any need to regulate it.

In Belgium, a Catholic country with a Catholic King, the separation between religion and politic is a fact. ALL religious symbols (even crucifixes) are banned from public places and public schools. There is no reason Muslims shouldn't follow the law.

Jews were and never have been a threat to the larger population. but my self and my people are going into hospital as and when ever needed, putting their lives at the hands of men and women... who take the hypocratic oath to preserve and protect life....And who earn one of the highest salaries.... who can been trained to kill us, not all but it has happenend why should we live in our own country in fear we fought 2 world wars and won, we welcomed you here to embrace us not to rule us !!! We should protect Blighty with all that we can. I am sick to death of hearing stories that we can not put up a UNION JACKS for fear of insulting the (minority ) or have a Nativity play or put up a scene of a Nativity. My home land IS a predominantly christian society and I DEMAND ! it stays that way . and by the way how many of you are working In the UK and sending money back home to your countries damaging our economy while yours prospers. I do not want to talk to a person who I can not see their face we read a persons face where im from...would you talk to me through a letter box ? If you dont like our way of life then please go to where your traditions are the norm and accepted. could we not even ask let alone DEMAND ! to live in your country the way we would in the UK ? I think not .
