A Political Question

Rush, A canadian band, wrote a song called "free will" which stated not making a choice, Is A Choice I completely agree with the ideas expressed in that song.

I think the Australian compultion to vote is a reaction to the apathy in the US where they are lucky to get 30% of the population to vote. And as a result you get presidents like George Bush Jr. elected not once, but twice... Would you really like to get a moron worse than Bush as the PM? Even if there is no one to vote for, there are a lot of people to vote against.

Another reason I want to get involved... I treasure the right to vote, I have waited five years of living in Oz to earn it, and I treasure it. But I respect your choice also.

RE: Single

yeah but then I would have to get up earlier, and my curtains would fade more, and I would have to milk the cows later (lol... my apartment would be hard pressed to accomodate a cow...) All arguments against Daylight savings time.

I have only one argument against Daylight Savings Time: it makes celestial navigation more difficult - it adds a whole extra term to the already too complex equation.

A Political Question

Careful there Rob. I'm an immigrant (about to be a new Aussie.) And I arrived on a boat. (And I also have a hereditary British title, but that is entirely beside the point.)

I think any government needs some kind of mechanism to solve an unsolvable impass within the government. As I mentioned before, a circuit breaker of sorts. The queen provides that.

And I think William will fill that role well, but I'm not so sure about Charles - he takes after his father too much.

RE: Single

LOL... well it is only 9:15 pm in Queensland right now, so it is still early.

There is nothing much going on tonight, there is nothing on tv (I have reruns of West Wing playing.) What do you do if you are single with nothing to do?

Why not hang out on a forum...?

A Political Question

I Agree with you Faithe. I like the idea of a remote, (almost) powerless, unelected figurehead as the head of government. She is almost like a circuit breaker incase the government blows up - something we saw in last years election.

This is a slight hang up I have with the greens, other wise I'm liking a lot about what the greens stand for (or at least said they stood for.)

A Political Question

AA you are also quoting from the Green manifesto. One of the core policies is a republican australia, and a revision to the constitution. (you guys would be surprised how well thought out the manifesto is for something written by whack jobs...)

Now on this point I have to dissagree - I think it is important to have a figurehead (especially a powerless one), and I don't like the idea of an elected figurehead... I would prefer hereditary, or even a random one...

A Political Question

Rob, I didn't realize you were a green.

I just finished reading the Greens Manifesto from 2007 (all 93 pages of it.) And you virtually quoted parts of it.

I know the general opinion of people is that the greens are wack jobs, and they are in politics, so perhaps they are (and perhaps I am for wanting to get involved?) But I have to say, I begining to lean toward them.

RE: Single

What wow wow wow ???

Go to Canada in Winter? wow

No, I have some friends that have invited me to spend christmas with them. They are also Canadian refugees, and own a bar called "The Loose Moose" in Thailand.

I also need some new suits. I can get custom tailored suits there for about $80 - here they would cost from $1,500 to $1,800.

Jewelry is also cheap there, so I was thinking of buying some, just incase I ever meet someone. Or is buying presents before you've met someone considered tacky?

(Oh, and I went to visit all the folks back in August, so I'm not neglecting them.)

A Political Question

Choosing a political party, is oftentimes like choosing a life partner. No-one is without faults. You have to choose based on your own beliefs.

Every party will have something you disagree with, but you learn to be politic/diplomatic about it, and keep your opinions in house. To take your opinion outside , is to devalue your political party.

Exactly right Abagail. Part of it is gritting your teeth and putting up with the parts you don't like.

Bob Katter's "Christian" policy

The ALP dominated by unions

The greens more radical elements

NLP corporate domination

Which is the best choice - none of them do I agree with 100%...

A Political Question

Well picking one is part of the quandry. I appreciate the feedback.

When you join the Labor party you have to make a pledge to use Union labor. Part of why it is called the "Labor" party i guess.

You aren't wrong with your comments about the coalition. But buying a political party is part of the way democracy is played here.

I had heard several comments about the greens... but I hadn't heard they were buying water rights. How does that work?

Any comment on Bob Katter's? party?

RE: """" I COULD"NT MAKE IT OUT """"

You do have to be careful who you share your bed with... rolling on the floor laughing rolling on the floor laughing rolling on the floor laughing

We had a very large huntsman come into the gym. I saw him while I was on the rowing machine, and just kept an eye on him - no one else had noticed him. (You know they can move really fast?) Then a young lady on the stationary bike beside me saw him... The screams!!! you would have thought someone was killing her.

The trainer ran over saw the spider, and was about to head the other way (I could see he was thinking it) but his sense of duty must have gotten to him. He tried to swat the thing with a towel, but yeah - they can really move... The trainer finally cought up with him near the bench press...

who needs reality tv when you can just go to the gym... grin

A Political Question

A true Gen-Yer... It's all about the money...lol

What about social change? Leaving the world a better place? Making life better for the next generation?

No - let's just party!!!

A Political Question

What political party would you join and why?

Keeping in mind joining a party is more than just voting for it. It means paying a monthly, or annual membership fee, and actually doing something (knocking on doors, making calls.) Rather than just yacking...

(I'm asking this, because as of Saturday I've earned the right to vote, and join a party. I plan to get onto this on monday. I have my choice narrowed down, but I would appreciate other opinions.)

and I'm all about parties... grin

RE: our Asylum seekers... when is it enough

I love the one world idea Serene, but for it to have a chance we would first have to eliminate those things that divide us. And that list is why we have refugees in the first place.

Just some of the things that we would have to eliminate:

1) Greed
2) religion
3) financial disparity

RE: ever faced death in the face and survived?

I expect that would do it for sure...

For me it has been sailing through three hurricanes (they call them cyclones down here don't they?) of course I swore I would never sail through another one after the first one... but they seem to find me... That is like facing instant death hour after hour for a week...

RE: ever faced death in the face and survived?

The sea does have her moments doesn't she?

We should compare notes some day.

RE: ever faced death in the face and survived?

Got a whacking great headache, and feel like you have a hangover too?

Wait till tomorrow... barf

RE: ever faced death in the face and survived?

Sounds like he was pretty lucky, and you were pretty quick thinking. Did you find time slowed down for you? The effect of the adrenaline kicking in?

RE: Pub chicks / guys vs online

lol... and that just proves that 6 out of 5 times 95% of all statistics are just made up +/- 3%.

Depending on where OS you are talking about, smoking rates go from a low of less than 5% of the population, to a max of 50%
