I know you mother will be in your thoughts always and will be watching over now, I this because my mother is doing that right now with me.
If you and the lady you are talking, you have discussed this matter. She should have heard your reasoning and not question your involvement. You now have to question your lady friend about the problem she has with your involvement with the children. Can she share you with others, is she obsessed with you and must be your whole world? Will she be able to handle all of the occassions that will come up for the children their families to be involved in your life.
The ex need counseling, the children need counseling to understand the reason your ex tried to commit suicide, so they will know it is not their fault and they could not stop it. The children need your support in counseling, if it is just you and the children with the counselor. The ex need individual counseling, because your relationship is no longer intact. Don't get me wrong, but your only obligation from this past relationship are the children and helping them. You should not feel any guilty about the ex and any situation she causes herself.
A simply Thank You could mean so much. It might be a sincere response to what was said with the flower. It might be a way to response in hope of opening the door of communicate, so that the original sender will send a email. A Thank You has so many reasons. If not interested the party can always state, Thank you, I am in a relationship or Thank you, but I am taken or Thank you, not available.
The flower or compliment could a lot of things also.
If it is a cell phone, his phone could have went out. Maybe he lost his job and could not afford the bills and he did not think of using the library's computer to let you know, or he could chicken out because he is afraid of meeting you or that he has someone else.
