RE: euthanasia

In the first paragraph above I was quoting someone else.

RE: euthanasia

Yes they can, actually. It is everyone's right to refuse treatment at any time, and just have enough treatment to ensure their comfort while they die naturally. So, at any time they can, right now, just chose to have a full on morphine drip and die in comfort. It does no-t take some radical change in the law to do that, that's available right now as part of basic patient rights. And if you didn't know that basic fact and you worked for the health service then no wonder people suffered.

RE: Wholl win Euro 2012

Englands problem is that its hard to get a bunch of self centered primadonnas to work together as a team. And if they get a bruise that could wreck their modeling contract next week, so they wont go in hard. See Beckham.

RE: fairly ok joke.

A man staggered home late after another evening with his drinking buddies.

Shoes in left hand to avoid waking his wife, he tiptoed as quietly as he could toward the stairs leading to their upstairs bedroom, but misjudged the bottom step in the darkened entryway. As he caught himself by grabbing the banister, his body swung around and he landed heavily on his rump.

A whiskey bottle in each back pocket broke and made the landing especially painful.

Managing to suppress a yelp, he sprung up, pulled down his pants and examined his lacerated and bleeding cheeks in the mirror of a nearby darkened hallway, then managed to find a large full box of band aids before proceeding to place a patch as best he could on each place he saw blood.

After hiding the now almost empty box, he managed to shuffle and stumble his way to bed.

In the morning, he awakens with screaming pain in head and butt to find his wife staring at him from across the room, and hears her say: “You were drunk again last night!!!”

Forcing himself to ignore his agony, he looked meekly at her and replied:
“Now Hon, why would you say such a mean thing?”

“Well,” she said, “there is the front door left open, the glass at the bottom of the stairs, the drops of blood trailing through the house, and your bloodshot eyes but, mostly….it’s all those band aids stuck on the downstairs mirror!”

RE: Wholl win Euro 2012

Yeah, in all seriousness it would be a brave person that would bet against Spain right now

RE: fairly ok joke.

Hugh Touhy married Lou Touhy. It didn't take long for the marriage to go kerplooie and, before you knew it, Hugh was having an extramarital affair with a woman named Sue and Lou was having lurid affair with a man named Stu. First Lou caught Hugh in flagrante with you-know-who and then Hugh viewed Lou on her knees with Stu doing what true floozies do.

In lieu of divorce, Lou, who eschewed lawyers, proposed an open marriage. Their breakthrough agreement:

Two Touhy Stipulations
One: You, Hugh, may screw whoever you can woo.
Two: You, Lou, can do Stu (the guy you blew).

Then Lou caught the flu and died. Boo hoo!

As if on cue, Hugh met someone new. Hugh soon married Rue and within two months there arose a hullabaloo. Rue just knew Hugh was two-timing her.

"Who?", she demanded.

Out of the blue, shoe number two dropped: "A few," he said. "You need to review this Honeydew," he cooed.

"Two Touhy Stipulations?" she shrieked. "I had no clue they applied to me too."

"You're a Touhy too. Initial here to renew."

"Screw you, Hugh Touhy. I bid you adieu."

And so Rue sued Hugh in the proper venue and won, proving for all times that Touhy Stipulations cannot be renewed Hughnilaterally..

RE: Timewasters

I've met a couple of really great Girls here, but it just didn;t work out for various reasons. I have no idea why the hell anyone would stand up a woman, its something I've never done, but I have been stood up a few times before myself... frustrated

RE: A drone lost ????!!!!!!!!

Reminds me of the spy plane that crash landed in China at the beginning of the reign of Bush the lesser, without self destructing as mandated by policy. When the pilot finally got home Bush II gave him a medal.

RE: What qualities make for a life-long relationship ?

A fat bank account might not guarantee a long and happy relationship, but it certainly can buy a better class of misery.

RE: Religion and the economic crisis

What do you mean? Catholic Societies like France, which was the Catholic power of Europe for centuries and is doing quite well thank you very much.
#Now it is true that certain Prodestant religions like the presbyterians value monetary wealth as an indicator of Gods favour and that they were part of the Elect. Those have a heavy influence on American Policy at the moment, and basicly feel that any help given to the poor should be wasted

"George Bush Jr often said that his views on the welfare state were influenced by catholic social policy for the poor (thats why welfare exploded upwards when he was president)."

No he didn't. Find me a speech where he said that. And the Welfare state didn;t explode while he was president either. Hell the guy spent a year trying to PRIVATISE SOCIAL SECURITY and put all the money in social security into the stock market. he did create a scheme called medicare Advantage alright, which basically was a givaway to drugs companies by allowing them to charge what they want and Medicare advantage could not debate the price.

I can tell you are getting this stuff from American right wing websites though as they are right now vilifying the welfare state as something wrought by catholics and therefore the cause of all the US ills as he wasn't a real conservative. The are partially right however as one of the beginnings of liberalism was a 19th-century Roman Catholic movement that favored political democracy and ecclesiastical reform but was theologically orthodox.

RE: Exit poll, how did you vote?

Interesting titbit from the RET polling

1249 More than a quarter of voters changed their mind about who to give their first preference vote to in the final week of the Presidential campaigning - with Gallagher losing more than half of those.

According to a Red C Recall Poll for RTÉ News, 28% of voters switched their first preference in the final week, of whom 58% switched from Gallagher, the vast majority opting to support Higgins instead.

I love being more or less right on that...

RE: Exit poll, how did you vote?

Not with SF getting just 8% in Dublin West. In a low turnout election a famous polerising figure like McGuinness will always do well, as what support he has will defo come out and vote, but the by-election result is probably closer to the true story. Everyone is invested in a by-election

RE: Exit poll, how did you vote?

Heres the Live Update from the RTE news website as of 12:47, Micheal D seems to have it in the bag from these.

Live updates:

1239 Tally from Cavan-Monaghan (with 53% of boxes open): Gallagher 42%; Higgins & McGuinness at 21%; Mitchell 8%; Norris 3%; Scallon 3%; Davis 2%

1238 100% of boxes open in Dublin West. Tallies: Labour at 25%, Fianna Fáil at 22%; Socialist Party at 20%, Fine Gael at 15%, Sinn Féin at 8%, Green Party at 5% and Independents at 4%. First count expected at 2pm.

1230 A specially extended News At One will be on air from 1230-1400 - Listen live here

1225 Tallies in Louth, Gallagher's home county, put Higgins leading the poll with 35%. Gallagher is second with 29%. 46% of the boxes have been opened there.

1222 With 36% of boxes open in Tipperary North, tallies put Higgins at 34%; Gallagher at 37%; McGuinness at 11%; Mitchell at 9%; Norris on 4%; Scallon on 3% and Davis on 2%

1219 Almost all boxes have been opened at the Waterford count at this stage and Presiding Officer Niall Rooney is confident of a first count by 3.30pm.

Higgins stands a front-runner in the race for the Áras: latest tally figures are putting him at 36.5%, followed closely by Gallagher on 33.2%. About two thirds of these would be rural votes, the remainder urban.

1218 With 45% of boxes open in Kerry South, tally puts Higgins at 39%; Gallagher at 31%; McGuinness at 14%; Mitchell at 7%; Norris and Scallon at 4% and Davis at 2%

1213 Kerry North-West Limerick tally - with 47% of boxes open - puts Higgins at 42%; Gallagher at 26%; McGuinness at 17%; Mitchell at 5%; Norris and Scallon at 4% and Davis at 2%.

1157 Speaking on RTÉ Radio this morning, David Norris said he was quite certain that the next President will be Michael D Higgins and he wanted to send him his love and congratulations.

When you have such a concentration of power in the hands of the coalition, he said, it is good to have someone who will speak out on behalf of the marginalised.

He said it had been a bruising campaign and said some of the comments made about him in the media were less than charitable.

However, he said he had been collecting apologies in the newspapers in the past couple of days and that they told the truth in the end.

RE: Bertie - The Interview

And that right there is what's wrong with politics in this country.

RE: gallagher crashes and burns

I'm betting if it wasn't McGuinness who said it, a lot less would have been made of it too...

RE: Exit poll, how did you vote?

Oh I voted Michel D, which will shock everyone I'm sure. grin

RE: Exit poll, how did you vote?

McGuinness has been dropping in the polls since the election started. he started at 16% and the last one I saw was 13% despite him trying to smear everyone else and whining about being victimized all the time. There's no way he'll get in, thank God.

It really is hard to call between Mickey D and Gallacher. McGuinness smearing him will have damaged Gallagher, but I think the votes he loses will go to Micheal D rather than to McGuinness himself.

As I said before, in a semi-rational culture like the south when you go negative you hurt yourself, you are gambling you will hurt the other guy more than you. Going negative on McGuinness torpedoed Gay Mitchell's campaign at the start, for example, but McGuinness didn't gain any poll ratings from it at all. He stayed at 16% in the next few polls and then stared dropping. So I cant see any support Gallagher loses transferring to McGuinness really.

But I think Micheal D is the only one that deserves the position, but Gallagher would grow into the role I think.

RE: Referendum,,, Yay or Nay...

I think the Judges in Ireland do a pretty good job and its a hard job to boot so I'll probably vote no on that one.

To be honest I'm undecided on the other one. Giving investicagtion power to elected officials isn't something I like, as I am a big believer in separation of powers, but I can see the logic of doing it that way as well for certain things.

RE: presidential poll

Don't ask me. I don't have a fekin clue whats going on here either.dunno

RE: do we need an army

Interesting question. I would certainly see a use in expanding our navy, as frankly ours is pretty anemic for an Island nation. We don't have an airforce but I don't think we need one, we couldn't afford one that would make a difference in an actual conflict anyway. There is always a use for a highly trained and equipped land force as well, both to handle national emergencies and to protect sensitive points of interest that come up from time to time. And its not like we don't have people trained in bomb making and terrorist activity on our soil that might need to be fought sometime.

There is a valid debate on the SISE of the army, but none on the need to have one.

I will say that I've spoken to military guys online for years and the Irish Army is very well thought of. Even the yanks grudgingly admit that

RE: presidential poll

I'm voting for Micheal D for his experience and international contacts, and second for Sean Gallagher as he could learn to be a very good ambassador for Ireland, even though he isn't there yet and he is lying about the FF connections. The rest are just useless, embarrassing or plain liars. I mean can you imagine Davis at a state dinner? "Did you know I ran the Special Olympics?" would be her sole topic of conversation.

RE: gallagher crashes and burns

How would you define a party though? Should a tiny party like the Natural Law Party get the same funding as Fianna Gael?

And how do you prevent a party creating a "Trust fund" calling itself "patriots for democracy" or somesuch BS title and then using that to spend money on behalf of that party anyway? That's what has happened in the US.

What the hell are you talking about?

Uno.

You know, if you don't tell me what you're on about I'm gonna...

Look I'm just talking about Uno!

RE: ARE YOU STILL FRIENDS WITH THE X/BOYFRIEND/X/GIRLFRIEND

I'm still pretty good friends with my Ex's, but I think you need a certain time of no contact, both to let the wounds heal and to get used to either being on your own or being with someone else.

RE: gallagher crashes and burns

I really couldn't care less about the envelope. So he picked up an envelope from some guy and dropped it off unopened at head office. Big deal. He probably didn't even know how much was in it.

What bothers me is the fact that he is minimizing his connections with FF. True he is not on the level of McGuiness lying about running as an SF candidate when he is one of the present leaders of the party, but the fact that he is flatly denying the connections he had doesn't show his honesty level to be very high. Personally I think simply saying at the beginning of his campaign "I was a member of the FF committee and I did some fundraising for them, but I left the party 2 years ago and I'm running as an independent." could have harmed him initially, but it would have armoured him against the kind of 11th hour attack we are seeing now. Honesty is a very powerful tool when used right.

Can you imagine the scene if he could have turned around on McGuinness and said something like "Yeah, I said I did some fundraising for FF 3 weeks ago" and then counter with zingers like "Well, its not like I threatened to firebomb his business if he didn't pay up" or "I wasn't holding a gun to his knee, was I?" Now that would have been television.

But instead we got a huge dose of the standard FF evasion once again. The sad thing is I'll probably still give him my second preference after Mickey D, as I don't see the rest of them as in any way qualified for the position or they have too much baggage.

RE: gallagher crashes and burns

Oh just for those who dont know "Slipper" was the character played by Nial Tobin in The Irish RM. The lovable rogue basicly.

Anyway, sorry to bring this up again but i have to share this.I just described what happened in the debate in another forum I post at and now McGuinness "stabbed Gallagher in the back" and an AMERICAN posted in the very next post.

RE: gallagher crashes and burns

Could not have said it better myself. Believe you me if there was a UDA or UVF idiot spouting crap here I'd be blasting him with similar facts, the only real difference of the Belfast gang war is that their politicians are willing to actually admit they were in the UDA. Hell McGuinnes even started his campaign trying to say he wasn't running as an SF candidate! Can you believe the brass neck of the guy?
