NATIONAL DAY OF REMEMBRANCE AND ACTION ON VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN
December 6, 2006
Did you know that December 6 is the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women in Canada? Established in 1991 by the Parliament of Canada, this day marks the anniversary of the murders in 1989 of 14 young women at l'École Polytechnique de Montréal. They died because they were women.
As well as commemorating the 14 young women whose lives ended in an act of gender-based violence that shocked the nation, December 6 represents an opportunity for Canadians to reflect on the phenomenon of violence against women in our society. It is also an opportunity to consider the women and girls for whom violence is a daily reality, and to remember those who have died as a result of gender-based violence. And finally, it is a day on which communities can consider concrete actions to eliminate all forms of violence against women and girls.
Men in London, Ont. wear white ribbons on their lapels and around their arms. A group of men start the White Ribbon Campaign as a symbol of men's opposition to male violence against women. Recently, a troubling study found that men assaulted one in seven women but only one in 250 cases were reported. The campaign's impetus comes from these statistics and the Montreal Massacre. In a CBC Television report, an organizer explains the ribbons symbolize "the idea of men giving up their arms."
I made it!!!!! Finally moved to Vancouver... not settled yet but I'm here. Worling at my new job --- bugging people, being nosy, filling out tedious forms, etc. Do I love it? I love working, let's leave it at that
I've been here - on and off - for about tem months. Yes, people come and go - and so they should.
I've met a handful of sweet genuine people (men and women) who are very real, indeed. I hold their friendship in high esteem.
Expectations - that's the difference between the disheartened ones who are soured by this medium and blame others for their unmet needs and the ones who are contented to visit and play and leave.
Keep it all in balance, yes, that's the key. This is not the only means of finding a mate, lover, friend.
Christmas time is bittersweet for my family. We enjoy being together and definitely keep the "consumerism" low.... small gifts.
In '91 we lost my teenage sister to cancer on August 12 and my dad's mother on December 25th. Never been quite the same since.
My favourite keepsake from christmas past is a tree ornament my little sister made when she was 3 in pre-school. A little block of wood, tied clumbsily with green ribbon. It reads "This is the hand you used to hold when I was only three years old" And her chubby little paw is on it in red paint. Makes me tear up every time I hang it lovingly on a limb.
Good to know there are two angel's smiles twikling in the star at the top of the tree

I love the sense of unity, without being nauseatingly patriotic ( not mentioning names), the multiculturalism, the typically liberated mind set, the lack of pretense of the Nation ( we aren't here to rule the world) our humble approach, our self critical imoulse, the fact we can respect our elected leader but don't go to the extreme of reverence, the feeling of safety, the respect and acknowledgement affforded our "First Nations People" ( unlike the US where they have homogenized Natives into "NativeAmericans"), and yes, the beer and the wines - especially BC wines
RE: Single at Christmas - how do you deal with it?
Its the same as being single the other 364 days of the year -- including the other significant birthday of the year --- MINE!!!!
