Personality is hugely attractive. Personally a photo does not a lot for me - it gives me an idea about if someone looks after themselves or not. I think it is easier to disregards someone because of looks from a photo than chatting in RL and liking someone's personality.
On the other hand - you can photo shop a photo or pick a flattering one, won't work in RL.
I grew up with lots of animals but never got one once moved country - first because of where I lived, now because not enough time and would make it hard to just go and visit family abroad.
