Perhaps joking around, having fun, can get misconstrued as flirting at times. Not sure, but from my perspective, I try to avoid flirting unless there is an actual interest.
Although I'll usually write that person to try getting to know them better. Hard part is getting them to write back.
I generally do, unless I think it's a fake profile. I have forgotten to reply a few times, and completely ignore the nasty mail, not that I've ever received much.

That sounds like a promising career choice, where does one apply? I think I'd enjoy that.
