As frustrating as this is, and we guys get it too, the most important factor to know is that you deserve better and didn't go along with their game. Just don't lose hope because of the jerks of the world. Doing so will only hurt yourself.
No, not many things better than a nice dinner with great company. Perhaps you should write up a disclaimer that you must have at least 1 dinner out a week and have your potential date sign it.
While I would agree with your core ideal, I think that a person should help their partner if their habits and/or actions are self-destructive. Perhaps I'm reading too much into this.
Nice guys always finish last...I'm a prime example of this rule. We're always found in the infamous "friend zone" for a shoulder to cry on when the jerks of the world crush them.
