Ending a relationship will always leave a shadow of hurt. I doubt if there is a way to do it without the pain. It is unavoidable. Most people don't like hurting others, thus choosing to do it via whatsapp.
Having said that I think face to face is the right thing to do. She may be hurt and detest you at first but in the end respect lasts longer...
