He goes into trouble of borrowing/selling smth/sacrificing half of his entire fortune to bring a smile on his W's face for that will bring enormous joy to him.

W feels that she can trust the M to understand and share the pain of past 'misfortunes'. By this time M already has a certain image of this W and you were this M you would leave this poor W, thus amplifying her pain, for she betrayed your trust by not telling it all on the first date?
