I suppose you're right in a sense that we put them there, but I think the trouble with that is the revenue from fuel taxation is so high, and has been so for so long that it has become such a massive and intrinsic part of Government finance, no incoming Government could afford to really do anything about it.
We're used to it and we keep paying it, and that's how it will be until the oil era is over.
When that happens, the income will not cease - it will just come from something else.
To the best of my knowledge, and any figures are only approximate, the actual cost of petrol (gas) is very, very low indeed - why it so expensive at the pumps is taxation. In the UK, about 2/3 the cost of a petrol is taxation. The remaining 1/3 is nearly all refinery costs - about 5% is for the retailers, and no, I am not trying to defend the retailers.
Different countries have different taxation levels, hence the anomalies.
