I have no belief in an afterlife anymore than I have a belief in a "beforelife" - although I'm not going to knock other people's belief systems since their experience is relative and because I simply don't have the answers. There's no evidence that's been peer-accepted by the scientific community so I'll just say the possibility of an "afterlife" is, as far as I'm concerned, an unknown. It's a fun idea to contemplate, it gives some hope that this life isn't all that there Is, and it relinquishes the fear of death to an extent...but in the end it has no meaning.
Rofl, I know halfpint. She e-mailed me a few times, but I quit responding to her when I started questioning whether she was a woman or a 12 yr old boy with too much time on his hands.
Allen, D&D rocks! What's your favorite edition? I like the D20 system, but still prefer the ol' 2nd Edition...I'm a dice fiend and love a good hack'n'slash when I'm allowed...
Catan board games. Chess. Spades, Hearts, Poker. Golf. Age of Empires. Toying with good friends (and sometimes not so good friends). Softball! Spin the Bottle. Quarters. Risk. Boggle. Dominos. Blind Man's Bluff. Magic The Gathering. Peek-A-Boo. ...ok, those to start...
I'm NOT going out on a limb here - I'm stating what Will happen in the years to come - There will be earthquakes, and fires, cold spells and droughts. Nations will fall again, and diseases - both new and old - will take the lives of millions. The innocent shall perish and the cold shall live to ripe old ages. False claims by greedy men (and women) will be made that they are the 2nd Coming. What I tell you is destined to happen, it is the Truth. Watch. Wait.
Sorry Brig, we're still not on the same page here...
An atheist has no belief in a god - that is not the same as believing there IS NO GOD simply for the fact that any "atheist" will tell you that you simply can't prove a negative. There are certainly atheists out there that will make the claim that "there is no god", but that's not rational since there's no evidence for it's non-existence. Anyway, go beyond your dictionary (as there are other definitions of atheism beyond the OED, and probably ones that are a bit less dated) and find out what atheists really think. There are TONS of websites/forums out there (i.e. the Internet Infidels Discussion Board) that might help you define that which you don't know, as I certainly haven't aided you any. -- I'm not sure, but you may have been going here - that by your OED definition (and by capitalizing the word "God") you meant that an atheist, as defined, denies the existence of the biblical god. I'd have to say that's correct considering such a god would not be a god in the true sense of the meaning...but as far as denying the possibility of a non-biblical god - no atheist nor anyone for that matter can make, again, such a claim. Anyway, we've hijacked this thread long enough, we can take it to e-mail from here on out if you're interested, since it is an interesting topic.
Brig, think for a minute please. You said " (and quoting me) "Atheism is a non-belief in a god." - (you) Correct. As such, it is a belief". Huh??
You also quoted "Please don't confuse atheists (who BELIEVE that there is no god, but cannot prove that belief any more than theists can prove that a god exists)..." Look Brig, atheists cannot prove that a god doesn't exist, nor is there any such goal among atheists. What you're stating is akin to you claiming that you have a non-belief in other universes, but since you can't prove they don't exist (as that would be a different dimension altogether) you're no different than those that make the positive "there are other universes" claim. It's not an equal battlefield as the proof lies with he who makes the positive claim. Also atheists don't BELIEVE that there isn't a god, atheists simply state there there is no proof for such a being, period. BTW, how often do you practice your agnostics religion? Makes no logical sense, Brig.
Atheism is a non-belief in a god. What would be the point of having a "religion" based SOLELY on the non-belief in something. "Hey, I have an idea - we don't believe in unicorns, so let's start a non-belief in unicorns religion". That simply makes no sense.
Brig - "There are established atheist religions on the planet. Buddhism for example is essentially atheist. Western atheisim itself can be regarded as a religion, as atheists believe that there is no god. It's a form of believe as well." -- Buddhism's only connection to atheism at all is the fact that there is no god involved. That they don't worship a diety does not not mean their religion is based on atheism whatsoever. Well, I'm off to work - running late! TC all and I'll get back to this later if necessary...have a good day:)
Just FYI, atheism is not a "religion". A religion, by definition, is a "belief in and reverence for a supernatural power or powers regarded as creator and governor of the universe". Atheists have no such belief and are therefore NOT religious. Night all:)
Kevin, "Hey there mr stud if you can have all these weman and next door nieghbors and be satisdied what the hell are you doing on a single line" --- ...hmmmm....I don't recall saying "Hi, my name is Stud and I can have all the next door neighbors I want". What I gave you was an ANALOGY on soul mates/LDRs (long distance relationships). Although I won't discount the possiblility that they 'can' happen, I just don't think it's a realistic venture for 95% of us "studs". Again, browse the threads, check out what other responses have been to similar questions. LDRs do happen, but so does being struck by lightning (as someone else posted earlier here or in another thread). And please don't flame me again, you're better than that.
I know I'm a dude and all, but I must say I like Depp too...maybe it's a generation thing, but I like his style.
Awesome friend - as in long distance? I've got a few here and there that if I were anywhere within 100 miles of I'd consider a relationship with - but distance does put a realistic damper on things. Go back and look at some other threads such as "Does distance matter?" - they might open your eyes to LDRs. I've been very close to one woman for 14 years - friends with her then and now, and I've been married twice during that time. That I'm divorced now means nothing - she lives in L.A. and as far as I'm concerned another world. I'm not a 'soulmate' kind of guy...I've been in the past, but experience has taught me that I can be just as happy with the girl next door as anyone else so long as we click.
At this point I'd lay it to a tree trunk - but not til the 2nd date of course...so no, I'm not THAT easy, sheesh! lol. Hey, what ever happened to that "does anyone love the Lord Jesus Christ stuff"? How'd we go from loving the Lord to laying pipe??? The Lord works in mysterious ways...
If a bank account were a physical feature I'd agree with you 101%, 2good. Since it's not, I'll just go with the mediocre 100%. Yeah dude, I learned that as well last time around.
I think in the long run it pretty much evens itself out...but to be honest with you, if he's only sharing her a meager 30-40% of the time, I don't care. There have been desperate times in the past when we'd have to hit the streets and pick us up a couple of those gumming, 40oz girlfriends, but you don't know where they've been or what kind of diseases you'll get from em - so we try to stick with the keg girls. Hey - where else can you get 70 pitchers of Bud Light for $50? BTW, today I went to lunch with TWO 21 yr old hotties I met at work. Sometimes life is good - real good. Is this thread hijacked enough yet to die?????? Thread Police, arrest this thread and put it out of our misery. Amen.
I hired someone to do my profile, and as a matter of fact the company writes all my posts (including this one), deals with all my e-mail and instant messaging as well. We're...I mean they're cheap. Let me know and I can have them take away all of your daily online stresses.
I guess we do drain the life out of them, but 2 bachelors and one girlfriend...she just won't last forever. We have, however, splurged and picked up 2 girlfriends at the same time. They don't wear out so quickly, and if one dies we can tag team the other for a while without actually ...wait, forget it - I think I've gone far enough, lol.
RE: halloween haunts
I always wondered why ghosts seem to be from the 1700's era to the near present. Funny how you never hear of any Neanderthal hauntings."Me name are Oooga. Boo!"
Guess it doesn't have the same effect.
