Adam and Eve went for a cheeky one in the bushes. or something to do with an apple,
Yes! from what I've always been lead to believe it was to do with "the apple"... But if eating a forbidden fruit is the original sin then who overlooked divorce as been the original sin for did not Adam call on Got to provide him with a replacement partner as his first one( forget her name) would not lay beneath him...
i know the custom of carrying the bride over the tresh hold goes back to the foundation of rome, the new city had a problem the hadnt enough women so the went to a neighboring tribe and carried away the reluctant women this became a custom in rome and later throughout the world[/qu
Yes that practise may well have been carried out in Roman times ...But the origin of the term threshold originated long before the Roman civilization....It actually originated in Babylonian times...From when the ancient Babylonians gathered their wheat and threshed it...Their floors were of dirt. (Only the wealthy had something other than dirt. Hence the saying, "Dirt poor" also originated from then.) The wealthy had slate floors that would get slippery in the winter when wet, so they spread thresh (straw) on the floor to help keep their footing. As the winter wore on, they added more thresh until, when you opened the door, it would all start slipping outside. A piece of wood was placed in the entrance way. Hence the saying a thresh hold....
Have we become spoiled with the modern day facilities and amenities....The next time you are washing your hands and complain because the water temperature isn't just how you like it, think about how things used to be. Here are some facts about the 1500s:
Most people got married in June because having all the planting done they took their yearly bath in May, though still smelled pretty good by June. However, they were starting to smell!! so brides carried a bouquet of flowers to hide the body odour. Hence the custom today of carrying a bouquet when getting married and the custom of throwing the bouquet came about because they were married at that stage so it did'nt matter about any smells.....(Too late Bud!!)
And talking of taking baths....
Baths consisted of a big tub filled with hot water...But because of the time factor and hassle of heating more water... The man of the house had the privilege of the nice clean water, then all the other sons and men, then the women and finally the children. Last of all the babies. By then the water was so dirty you could actually lose someone in it. Hence the saying, Don't throw the baby out with the Bath water.
Hey up folks..... Just got an Email from (ahemmm!!) and in it cats and dogs were referenced to the present weather we've been enjoying It just brought to mind an idea for a thread...
Any one of yez know of any old habits, sayings or customs we use throught our daily lives and just how did that habit/saying/custom come into being...
Start the ball rolling...
"Its raining cats and dogs"!!....
Way back in olden times houses had thatched roofs...thick straw piled high, with very little wood underneath.... It was the only place for animals to get warm... so all the cats, small dogs and other small animals (mice, bugs etc) lived in the thatched roof... However when it rained it became slippery and sometimes the animals would slip and fall off the roof.... Hence the saying "It's raining cats and dogs"!!!
Like to old saying goes... I came... I saw.... Then I... <<<<<<<<<< scattered back to the world of sanity......
Site is just not for some peps or else they dont hang around long enough to get to know the other inmates
I joined this site some few year back...Got to know some GOOD peps...Slowly they disappeared or just lost contact...I went kinda quiet for a while and lost touch with all the fresh faces...Was unsure just how the "oldie"/"newby" senario would pan out...So I just took the proverbial jump last night and started "chatting" (or so to speak) and had a ball .....and as a result have fallen "MADLY IN LUST" with somw pep(s)....
