I have an old boyhood acquaintance that says he is my friend ... but everytime I ask him to go out to do things ... shoot pool ... lunch ... etc, he or his wife is sick ... or other excuses ... phone conversations yes ... but friend to go out type no ... and someone to count on ?? ... Come to think of it crowds are better than these so called neighbors! Sorry got carried away ... it happens with me sometimes...

I whole hearted agree ... For one can enjoy living alone, if this is their forte, their individual lifestyle.
I too, at times, can be alone in my solitude, creativity and meditating ...It's my own world of peace and contentment ... for we all should have some private time and space for oneself.
But to be lonely can be heart rendering in more ways than one ... no shoulders to lean on,no one to tell their troubles to, or even to share some of their good times with, no warmth for ones soul, no companionship to grow old with.
Perhaps they have lost a dear one or soulmate ...and are not over the bereavement period or cannot cope with their loss.
Yes, loneliness can be for lack of a better word ... Sad ...
