Desalination huh? Now that seems to be a bit extreme if you ask me. You do have the longest coastline in north america though Not. Your country would have the salt water to do it if it ever became neccessary.

I just wanted to make a comment on the water supply though. Now that you brought it up. For the past few years the rain supply has been way out of whack. 5 years ago there was no rain. Went on like that for 3 years in a row. I think it rained something like twice a year where it was over 1/2 inch of water at any time. It was terrible. All my crops were withering and dying. And all my irrigation ditches were bone dry. And i have some real deep irrigation ditches. One that is over 12 ft deep and that was even dry as can be. But then 2 years ago the flood gates just opened up. Since that spring we had rain on average at least once every third day in a row all year. We had numerous times where we'd be getting 5 or more inches of rain overnite. And you know what? I'd take a drought any day.
A drought i can do something about. At least with a drought i can mulch and try other techniques to make the plants require less water. That darn flooding from too much rain. Well it's killing me. Not only have my fields been under water for a week or more at a time. Killing every living plant. But then there comes the diseases when the sun does come back out, and the humidity and mosquitoes are just unbearable.

I got no point to make here i guess. Just that i'd rather have too little water than too much.

Wow.. you have narrowed it down considerably. I have never grown cotton nor sugar cane. Sorry i can't give any personal experience on those. I know people who grow both.. but i'm not gonna spend any time asking questions of em for ya. That would be just too time consuming. And there may be some expectations as you said.. plant x number of seeds, expect x number of bales of cotton at the end of the year. But there are still so many other factors besides the pesticides and fertilizers that can effect the amount of yields. Amount of rain, sunshine, heat or cold.. and i even had a tornado hit not too long ago. There are a whole host of factors besides the chemicals you might use.

But, just for the record.. i'm pretty much an organic farmer myself. I will use pesticides if it's a last resort.. and i'm not certified organic. But for the most part i stay away from anything that's not organic. And that cotton is usually very pesticide and fertilizer intensive here in the US if that helps any.

Sind.. sorry i can't answer your questions.. I've yet to see one. Seems like you're just wasting everyones time here. You know there are a whole host of pesticides and chemicals that farmers use for a wide variety of diseases and pests. It's impossible to lump all farmers into one particular method or choice of something like that. Alot of people do what we call substainable farming.. or organic farming. They don't use any pesticides or chemicals. Just use beneficial insects to control the bad insects.. and natural remedies and fertilizers. There are just so many things and different methods to say that all farmers are the same here in the US.

Production amounts.. well there again you're gonna get a whole lot of different numbers. It depends on how they are grown.. how good or bad the weather and other conditions are.. and a whole lot of other factors. It varies year to year. I could give you average numbers under specific methods.. but then that would only be for one farmer. Not much use for you there. You can look alot of the information you want about yields for the entire US for a specific crop if you want. But, like someone else says.. that's easier to find just by going to Wikipedia than it is to ask in here.

Anyways.. sorry you don't have any real questions.. sorry i'm not gonna waste my time playing around when you don't even know what it is you want to know. But, that's the best i can tell ya.. do your homework yourself.

What would you like to learn? Might be easier to have a question to answer than to try to explain the whole system. That could take a lifetime to just try and explain the whole system when we don't know what it is you are interested in. Are you looking for the laws that regulate the farms, procedures, techniques, something about the plants, what?

Ok.. lets see it may not be an exact system. Just a way of doing business. The way they campaign for one. They take money from special interests in order to go and lie to the people.. make promises to every different group they can find and promise them all something different. Of course they know full well they won't keep any promises so none of that matters anyways. But then they are beholding to the special interest groups who got them elected by financing them during the campaign so they vote on some funding to pay them back first. IE Acorn. They vote in favor of the special interest groups on every bill that comes up and they write the laws that will be the most favorable to their most favorite corporations or interest groups. And if it gets voted down.. they push it thru again and again and again and again untill they get it passed. Usually by putting it into another bill that they know will be passed. In other words they sneak em in there.

They make deals with each other.. you wash my back i'll wash yours.. so that they can get people to vote for their special pork projects. And to top it all off.. they won't even vote for the major ones like the Bank giveaways and Auto company bailouts or this heathcare scam unless and untill they are already promised the votes that they will need to pass them.

That's the system i'm talkin about. Ignoring the people.. ignoring a fair vote.. ignoring what's right for this country. The system that rewards liars and theives and makes them our politicians. The system that allows them to play party games with each other while being completely out of touch with what the country needs. That system.

I'm not a republican, and i'm not a democrat. I'm just an american citizen. I can't say that the republicans aren't playing that game. They may very well be. But, when it comes to the Healthcare scam they are trying to pull.. i'm glad that someone is stopping it. No matter what their reasons behind it are. At least for once it is what the american people want. To end this charade of trying to tell us that they are doing what's best for us when they know full well they aren't even listening to what we want or need.

All this partisan game playing needs to end. Whether you're right or wrong on this one bill. They need to learn how to represent the people who elected them... and not the special interest groups who give them money to run for office. BOTH parties!! The whole system needs to change. Change the system and we can end all this idiotic bull crap that they have been doing for decades.

Well, it's probably because they have more information than we do about what goes on in this country. I can't say how they form their opinions... but they do have access to far more info than we do.

As an american living in the US i watch the mainstream media. And in case you haven't noticed it yourself. It's all put out by one man. One committee or whatever decides what you the viewer will see on every TV station. Don't beleive me? Try paying attention some time. Every single station will have the exact stories every single day. They change reporters.. they change the local fluff stories and human interest parts. But for national news it all comes from AP, UPI or Reuters. Every single national story. And whomever decides which news you are going to see that day is not going to allow you to see what they don't want you to see. They'd rather put a balloon boy as breaking news alert on every single station at the same exact second than allow some reporter to report on what is going on in afghanistan. And if it's a real stupid idiotic stunt like that.. well they can run that one for 2 weeks and block out any real news. That's what you get in the US. You get a few cable channels that will deviate from the agenda a bit. You get a few newspapers that will go rougue.. but for the most part you aren't seeing what everyone else around the world is seeing.

I can find out far more about what the US is doing on everything by watching Al Jazzera english or Deutchablea stations than i can by watching the US channels. And you can find it out much sooner... weeks sooner even. And that's if and only if the man running the media decides there is already too much interest in the story to hide it any longer or that it would fit into his agenda of what he wants you to think. Otherwise you don't see the half of what is going on in this country. Yet the rest of the world does. That's why they all think they know more about what goes on here than we do. It's because they do!!

I absolutely disapprove of what they are doing now. It's not healthcare reform at all. Has nothing to do with healthcare except to force every american into another ponzi scheme like social security. And we all know that dosen't work. If they want to reform the healthcare they will need to start all over from scratch. Nothing in these current bills is salvagable.

Ok.. i think you might be right about that. But, we are supposed to practice democracy aren't we? And what we do in our government isn't at all democratic. More like those with the money and power making the rules for those without the money and power. And i don't mean as representatives of the people. I mean as in the politicians are bought and paid for by special interests and corporate monopolies.

Cool thread you have here. I can't pick one though. I like all the choices and some that you forgot to mention that other posters have brought up too. But my favorite dectective would have to be me. I learned from all of them at one point in my life or another. So, i have the CSI skills, the investigation and observation skills, research skills and even the MacGyver ingeniuty all combined. I'll even throw in a little of the mythbusters.

Nice post there ttom I agree with most of your opinions. And it's a pleasure to see a well thought out and researched post at least on the parts i don't agree with. Now that is the way people are supposed to debate... not calling names back and forth and not really saying anything. I don't know a thing about right, left, centrist or any of that political speak. None of that matters to me. That's part of that name calling i mentioned. So, let me just jump to the part where you mentioned the mine rolling machine. Ok.. here's my thoughts. How fast does it run up the side of a mountain? How much does it cost? And is it worth the investment of a few more billions for all the practical use we'll get out of it? Cause if you ask me.. all those other people are wrong. It don't matter what any other country has failed to do.. or any historical leaders that can't do anything either, We should be intelligent enough to learn from not only our mistakes, but the ones made thruout history too. But, apparently we're not. Having the best weapons and the most advanced communications and delivery systems are nice to keep us from being defeated as fast as the russians were. But it's not enough to just have the biggest guns, the biggest most expensive bombs, nor the mine rolling machines. What they need to do is learn how to fight the taliban. I've been telling them for years how to defeat the fighters and they go and do the exact opposite. The reason we're losing over there is because we don't have any strategies that are proven to work... and when we do we keep fighting by textbook. And it's not the same book the taliban is using.

Now i know most people don't recall Napoleon and the battle of waterloo. But for a couple years now i've been telling the politicians how to use the weather to defeat them. It's awfully hard to hide when they have to walk thru the snow in order to move anywhere. And it's not like we can't equip our soldiers with the proper clothing to keep them safe and give them enough food to keep them from starving to death. What they are really doing wrong though is allowing the taliban to have the high ground. Everyone knows you get a better vantage point by looking down on your enemy than looking up at them. And no kidding here. I could find every single one of em with just a few boyscouts stationed on the tops of the mountains with a telescope a mirror and a flashlight. Probably wipe em out too if you let me use frisbees and flaming paper airplanes.

It's not all about the money.. it's not all about the biggest more expensive, baddest weapons. It's still about strategies... and that's never gonna change. And it's strategies we don't have right now.

Other than that. You're right.. that mine roller would scare the poo out of em. But that'll just chase em up to the high ground where they'll have an even better advantage over us. And when they don't have to worry bout stepping on their own mines.. what the heck is stopping them from coming back whenever and whereever they want. Or do we have to put up with another 8 years of developing the climbing mine planting machine too?

Yeah i know.. they may start out with good intentions... but the way the system works, no matter how honest and well meaning they are, they have to be corrupt in order to stay in the game. It's a shame really.. one of the very first things they should of been doing is fixing themselfs. But, of course they don't want to do that simply because anyone who would attempt it would be run out of office by his compadres. I think that's something we voters will have to fix ourselves seeings they aren't capable of it. Possibly by voter initatives.

Now the humanitarian.. like you said that is a whole nother subject in and of itself. That would take several threads to point out all that is wrong with our current entitlement programs and services. What a colossal waste of money that all is. I've got nothing against helping those who need help... but do we really need to spend 250,000 on government workers to deliver 15,000 to each family on welfare? If you ask me it would go much father if they just hand the money to the people who need help without making them jump thru the hoops that they design to keep people from being eligible. It'd be cheaper simply because of removing the beauracracy. But, i'm still not in favor of our government handling it in the first place. They can't do anything right.. even give money away.

Tell you what in the morning? That they are inept at doing anything right.. or that i could do a better job of anything they attempt to do? Cause i can tell you that again now.

You want to fix healthcare for example. Get rid of all insurances. Malpractice and medical. Don't need em.. they're just ponzi schemes. Get rid of those. Eliminate all malpractice lawsuits that aren't criminal and the employers will be able to hire more people and the doctors will be able to charge affordable fees instead of these bloated up fees that the system causes. Simple as that. Just get rid of all healthcare insurances.

That's good that it will fizzle out. But the problem with politicians is they are sneaky. They'll keep putting it thru untill they get their yes votes. Today they'll call it healthcare reform.. tommorrow it will be called save the children bill. That's just politics as usual. Which last time i checked obama said he was running to change. But, oh wait a second. What has he actually kept his promises on so far? Change.. yeah.. change his mind on wether to lie to the public to get votes.. or to lie in order to keep people from seeing he is all talk and absolutely no action.

And since i see there are many in here who are staunch democrats.. i'll just let you all know.. i'm not owned by any party. I'm an american.. plain and simple. From that list of things obama supposedly rocks on.. i can't see a single one that is either accomplished anything postive.. or would ever be a postitive change even if we did spend a few more trillion on it.

They want to fix healthcare, the economy or even end the war with the terrorists.. all they have to do is call me. I'll fix it for them. Cause they are totally inept at doing any of those things. All the politicians.. not just democrats.

As an electrician maybe i can elaborate the way it was described. Yes electrons are negatively charged. But the simple explantion dosen't quite explain it too well too me. The flow of electricity is from negative to positive but the atoms themselfs change polarity constantly, they are fixed in time and space they don't move... only the electrons are doing the moving.

When an atom is positive charged it is because it has a low amount of free electrons. Those are the ones in the outer orbits of the atom who are free to move from atom to atom. Thus when a material has an electron removed it then becomes postively charged. And yeah when another free electron moves from the orbit of a negatively charged atom to a positive one.. they both change. The negative one becomes positive and the positive one becomes negative. I guess my understanding of the way it works isn't any better of a description. But, both negative and positive are constantly changing states when electricity is run thru an atom. Wether its direct current or alternating current.. it's gonna be just as often a negative atom as it will be a postive one. It's more for a direction of travel of the electricity that one would describe atoms moving from negative polarity to positive.

Well I can see no one is gonna understand my explantion any better than the earlier one. Man this isn't as easy to explain as i thought it would be.

I'd have to go with number 2 too. The politicians here don't care what any of the citizens say. They are only in it for the money. And of course they need the money in order to run for elections. That's what is wrong with this country is the way they raise billions of dollars from special interest groups in order to pay for all that TV ad time. Then they are beholding to those special interest groups and they do the bidding for them and nothing to do with the people. The public vote is just a sham anyways.. they only come out and lie to us every time they are running for office. Then the rest of the time they completely ignore the people. So, yeah there is too much government involvement in our daily lives. They don't care one bit about the constitution. If they stuck to just the powers afforded them under the constitution we wouldn't have any of this social security mess... none of the medicaid and medicare fraud... and them making laws telling us what we have to wear on our heads when we go biking or skiing, and what we can take for medicine and when we can talk on the phone. There is far too much illegal government involvement in the citizens lives here. I say illegal because they don't have the constitutional authority to make any of those laws.

This country is a joke. It's not even close to being a democracy.

You know when it comes to what women look for in men. I've heard that being funny trumps all. Well actually i just saw that on TV yesterday and it was only one woman saying it. But, i don't consider myself to be that funny. Maybe once in a while someone will get my sense of humor but not very often. Usually it's just me that thinks something is funny.

Like Blue says.. alot of the scammers don't even read the profiles. They just search who's online and reply to all of them. And this place is loaded with scammers. I've been getting dozens of them since i've been here. And i've only been on this site for a couple weeks. I get the same kinds of messages and they all say basically the same thing. That they think we're perfect for each other... that they want a relationship with me.. and they want me to message them back at some other place. Usually yahoo instant messanger.

If you ask me this site isn't doing a very good job of keeping the scammers out. Cause it would be easy enough to block all the yahoo email addresses from joining.

So, all i can say is if you're getting messages from people who obviously haven't even read your profile. It's a good bet they are trying to scam you.

Actually i think it's more so to protect the stupid from themselves by calling all of us stupid. Yeah it protects those who are involved with the people who can't figure out how to drive from being in accidents with them. But, mostly i think it's to protect them in the first place.

And as stated over and over again. Our governments will stop at nothing to make laws to protect the few while taking away the rights of the majority. And they are addicted to the money they make off of the stupid ones.. and the stubborn ones who refuse to conform. It's all about money.. and it's all about control. Little to nothing to do with safety except for the fact that they can use it to cause fear in the majority in order for them to give up their freedoms.

Yes they are. But i believe you've settled the debate on texting while driving. We should just have a law like the one in the UK. It spells out certain things such as cell phone use, and texting.. yet leaves it open enough to include all other stupid acts which are as of yet unforseen.

No need for any law against either cell phones or texting or eating while driving individually. It spells it out clearly enough.. you do stupid things.. you are breaking the law. Simple easy and all encompassing. I like it. So that's what we should go for. A real logical sensible law. I still don't know what the penalites should be. As i said.. just making money off of crimes by the government isn't an appropriate punishment in my opinion.
