I think it should be against the law bc alot of ppl have been hurt/killed by ppl texting and driving. I mean, I have done it, yes Im guilty too, but......I still think it isn't safe, and its impossible to look at the words on your phone and at the road at the same time.

Using a cell phone whilst driving is very much illegal in the uk. In fact if you're involved in a fatal accident whilst doing so you could receive a fourteen year prison sentence.

Not only texting should be against the law. Use of a cell phone also distracts while driving. In Texas laws are being mandated on the use of cell phone while texting or conversating, especially on school zone during school hours. There are bluetooths to use while driving.
Ever since I heard the story of a mother chatting with her daughter on the phone while driving the daughter had a accident in the middle of their conversation and all that mother heard was the last breath her daughter took I dont txt I dont talk to people while driving and I make sure when I am home that anyone calling me is not driving or txt me while driving I will hang up on them if they dont get off the phone I am very adamant about this it is very serious and should have been a law long time ago
Absolutely, it is by far one of the more dangerous activities to do whilst going at high speed....we are bring out a law against it here in OZ as well....
Ohh one other thing....i have actually seen a news article that speaks of a newly designed program that will be uploaded to all cells which will disable the texting capabilities if the phone is going past a certain speed....i think it will utilize the inbuilt tracking features to detect and activate the program....
I think all cars should be outfitted with a device to shut off all phone devices once you start the ignition. A telephone, even a headset, is a diversion.

YES and it is here but people still do it a lot no matter what they are driving (crazy inconsiderate numptys )
They just passed the law here... rather quickly, after tragedy struck.
A taxi driver was driving a young couple across the river. A man was coming the opposite way, who'd had too much to drink & was texting, as he was driving across the bridge. He hit the taxi head-on & killed the taxi driver & female passenger. He's in REALLY hot water now. <-- this is for the young man who lost his fiance that night.

We should be doing that here in Calgary. Was almost run over in a crosswalk as the lady was on her cell phone and didn't seem me.
A car/van/truck/motorcycle is a weapon, you might as well ask should I be allowed to juggle with AK-47's outside a school. I don't agree with vehicular manslaughter and causing death by dangerous driving call it what it is, manslaughter and murder. It's like the mitigation "I was drunk" so what? you MADE the choice to drink and should be COMPLETELY responsible for your actions whilst drunk. Too many of my friends have been injured and killed by "Sorry mate, I didn't see you" drivers.
sindhiboy: it is harmful to talk on the phone/text,it should not be allowed
Well isn't it also harmful to be trying to eat fast food while driving? How about yelling at your kids in the backseat while driving? What about daydreaming about a tropical island full of naked women while driving? Oops, but I digress....
Point is, there are ALOT of things that are distracting to drivers which can cause them to have traffic accidents... should we outlaw EVERYTHING? If not, why not?
Idea! Why not just outlaw driving itself? If everybody is forced to walk then that should eliminate ALL traffic accidents, right?
This is the same issue as trying to ban guns... guns don't kill people, people kill people, so why not get to the source of the problem and just ban people? Cell phones don't cause traffic accidents, piss-pore drivers who don't pay attention to their driving CAUSE TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS... so make piss-pore drivers illegal, and leave the cell phones for responsible drivers who know when to say "Hey I can't talk right now traffic's getting bad I'll call you back when I'm in a better area" and hang up!

The problem is who gets to decide who is a good driver and who isn't I've seen drivers who to be quite honest couldn't have pulled their zip up safely yet they claim to be brilliant drivers. I can remember seeing a Police motorcyclist get knocked off and the drivers response was that "It wasn't my fault, if the police motorcyclist had been riding slower he would have been able to stop when I pulled across the front of him!" The Police motorcyclist was responding to an emergency with lights horns the works!
Funny that there was a report released just today that a study conducted by some group (I forget the name) found that laws against using cell phones didn't reduce the number or severity of traffic accidents in areas that have passed such laws in recent years.... the accident rates have remained the same as before the laws were passed.
Everytime somebody get's hurt in an accident, there are calls for MORE LAWS... life's not safe by design people, and you cannot micro-manage life by laws piled on top of laws. The law of diminishing returns comes into effect. Ironic that! LOL!
Here in Texas they recently passed a statewide law banning the use of cell phones entirely (no handsfree even) in school zones... now what if I'm on a call driving, and enter a school zone and in my haste to get off the phone and put it away run right over some kid who's crossing the street? Just the very act of having to get off the phone and put it away is distracting to a driver, perhaps even more so than the phone call itself. The law, could actually cause accidents. Brilliant!
Ergo I think it's a bad law. The law regarding driving already mandates that drivers must pay attention to their driving BY LAW. Piling more laws on to of that just makes a mess of things IMHO.
ps. I was in an auto accident in 2003 where the other driver was distracted by her cell phone and made an illegal left turn 20 feet in front of me on a divided freeway and I T-Boned her vehicle... she was at fault, not her cell phone. I blame the driver for not paying attention to her driving, not the cell phone for being in use. Bad drivers are bad drivers, no matter what else they may have going on inside their vehicle. Kapish?

I'm not arguing your point there... but these "banning" this and that laws, they're throwing the baby out with the bathwater. Everybody is being penalized for the sins of just a few.
I don't agree with this business of stacking laws on top of laws on top of laws. If you want to protect EVERYBODY from traffic accidents, then ban automobiles and everybody can just walk. Problem solved!
Otherwise, there will always be somebody causing a traffic accident because of poor driving.
Cell phones don't cause traffic accidents, people do. Regards!

Yes but you claim you can multi-task so it wouldn't happen would it? It's all the other numpties out there who need post-it notes to remind them to breath, yet still think they are the best driver since Fangio who need to be stopped. After all if you can't deal with putting a phone down when you enter a school zone without crashing should you be using the phone in the first place.
Yes there are thousands of other distractions out there that cause accidents but what's wrong with removing at least a few?
felixis99: IT SHOULD AGAINST THE LAW TO HAVE A CELL PHONE IN ONE'S CAR!!!!!!! DAGGONE THINGS ARE MORE DANGEROUS BEHIND THE WHEEL THAN A DRUGGED UP STREET THUG....just sayun.....
I agree with that. I turn my cell phone off in the car and only put in on when I am pulled over or out of the car. I have had too many close calls with cell phone drivers wandering in two lanes. I hear the hands free system might work.
