A growing body of psychology research shows that incompetence deprives people of the ability to recognize their own incompetence. To put it bluntly, dumb people are too dumb to know it. Similarly, unfunny people don't have a good enough sense of humor to tell.

What I so strongly disagree with is protective custody in these cases. Animals like Paul Bernardo being confined to solitary and protected is NOT justice IMO ...Turn them loose, let the inmates have at it I say...That way there ARE consequenses and the public doesnt foot the bill (at least not for long) Animals fear other animals...I think that knowing what will happen to them in prison is a built in very strong deterent.
Yabut Con once you knowingly commit murder, you have relenquished your humanity. You have no more rights too it. You are less than human (in my books) Obviously the death penalty is a joke that costs society endless dollars. so thats not the answer. Treat animals as the animals they are. Inmates have horrid ways of exacting thier own justice so really it would be justice served.
Tough question for sure. I can understand why some are for it. However, I also believe there are other ways of dealing with it. For example murderers who commit acts against children should be turned over to the general prison population. They should never be incarcerated in protective custody. Believe me, we wont be supporting them for long if they are released into general prison population. Prison justice is a horrid thing to contemplate and I believe a greater deterent than death. There are far worse things than death.
The problem I have with the death sentence, is the hypocrisy of it. Its against the law to commit murder so, if you do, we will murder you??? I think there are much worse punishments within the prison system itself, let prison justice do its work.
