Sailfree...I am sure we all agree with that. The numbers are beginning to assume massive proportions especially for the village that was washed away.

Two Questions in One - Japanese Earthquake

Thanks Tomcat.....

I'm not worried about me...I think I can make my own opinions. It's the influence that this sort of coverage extends across teh rst of the population....(you excluded of course!).

I am watching it as I write...the pictures are being recylced with ever more (almost) histrionic reporting.

They had an expert on saying that there was no time to issue tsunami warnings to mainland Japan...the reported that despite warnings, people were driving along oblivious of the water that was about to engulf them...

I hope you seewhat I am trying to get at....

In the middle of this chaos, they can't report objectively....there are no 'FACTS'...

Two Questions in One - Japanese Earthquake

Watching Sky News I am appalled at the coverage of the dreadful events in Japan. The trouble is, that the broadcaster is clearly simply passing on things said in his earpiece...he has no knowledge of anything relating to geological events and an audience which also has no knowledge, will believe him.

For example, he has said that because of the convergence of 3 tectonic plates, Japan has had earthquakes 'for a long time'. What he means is...forever! (geologically speaking of course).

He hhasalso said in recent moments that there has been a report that there 'MIGHT' be a leak at the nuclear reactor that has been causing problems due to water cooling levels.

Sky have already backed off from the original 'There will be 10metre high waves from the tsunami' news taht they were putting out earlier.

Sorry for going on...the first question is.....Is 24 news coverage doing us any favours, or is it just creating an immediate problem by speculating without checking facts first?

The other thing is that within 10 minutes, there is a 'Helpline' telephone number. What is the real point of this? Who is going to call it and for what purpose? Do I call and say my Dad is in Japan....is he OK? Is this a case of doing something to convince the audience that something is being done....but in fact, it is a meaningless gesture?

So Question 2....Are Helplines a help or a hindrance?.......

In the meantime, Japan is in a desperate state and we all wish them well.......

Internet Dating - Does It Work?

Thanks to everyone for responding. Very interesting!

When you meet someone 'for real' you have an opportunity to assess the person in many ways...their appearance, the way they talk ( accent and content!!), their demeanour....all sorts of things. You are able to make a very fast decision about whether or not you will let the conversation continue.

Internet dating doesn't allow that so you need to engage a different set of rules. In the old newspaper ad days, everything was done by telephone. The ad allowed a voice message to be left so at the most basic level there was something of the person to assess. If you liked the voice, and what was being said, you left a message. If the recipient liked the message you gat a call and you could then begin a process of trying to build a 'relationship'.

The written word is cold and emotionless. That's why there are some many emoticons on this page. The number of times my written messages (text and email) have been misunderstood! We should contact each othjer and at the very least talk to each other so that we can have some understanding of the other person and what they like/want/need, and you can in turn, explain your desires.

What's the difference between these 2 phrases?

Don't make me laugh....

Don't make me laugh.....

Well the first one means I am in a difficult situation here and if I laugh I will be in a spot of embarrassing trouble so please don't.....

The second means that I have had enough of the arguments and accusations, the last of which was a complete fabrication so please don't.....

I'm going to change my profile now!!

Internet Dating - Does It Work?

There was a letter in a national daily (UK) newspaper recently in which a man compalined of the awful time he was having meeting people from internet sites.

He was about my age, 60+ and was trying to be honest and open with the people he was contacting. His complaint was that the women he met were pretty awful when it came down to it.

He claimed that women always lied about their age, that they wanted someone who was almost Superman and Germaine Greer combined and three quarters of them turned up with their dogs or other lap animals!!

Now I am the first to admit that as far as dating goes, I am certain that 90% of women who met me would go home grateful in the knowledge that they had got away!!

In the past I have used newspapaers to place ads. In doing so I met many women who were almost always really nice people with genuine reasons for being on th elook out for a man. The responses to the ads were always very good too.

But I too find internet dating a bit of a problem. I think the main reason though is the simple lack of numbers of eligible women on the sites. By eligible I mean within reasonable distance and in the right age band.

To be fair, I have met some very nice women (one in particular was very pleasant) via the internet, but my circumstances changed part way through my adventures and ruined things....possibly leading to the disillusionment of others!!

What does everyone think??

RE: IS THERE A GOD?

Anyone wishing to promote a 'belief' does it with great skill. They answer the obvious pitfalls first, and because they are ultimately seeking to get you (the atheist/agnostic) to change your mind, they are quite persuasive. Most have probably done an American sales course(have a look at one..they can get you to buy anything!!).

Religion is for those who are frightened of death, or can't work out where the sun comes from every morning, or have to have a reason for existing at all. Even worse, when they have got it, they want you to have the benefits too even to the extent that they will kill you if you don't join in! It's a bit control freaky for me. Did 'GOD' envisage an earth full of crusaders killing all his children for not believing? And anyway, what's wrong with other, non-god religions? Why is the Christian God the right one?

I once read a mathematical argument for believing...it went something like this. You are only on the earth for a very short time. If God does exist then the rewards (assuming they have been interpreted correctly) are immense...you know..as much gold as you can eat etc. Therefore the odds are that it is worth a punt because it won't matter if you are wrong!

Personally I am willing to take the chance and look forward to centuries of darkness. I'm sure 'GOD' will forgive me if I'm wrong!!

Incidentally, I'm not sure about a deity that creates a person in HIS image only to find that that person has decided to do his own thing. Doesn't say much for the designer does it?

RE: any Isaac Asimov fans

Asimov was not bad and for his time was quite original...but he is full of himself. His stories reek of ego...he insists at all times in telling you how intelligent he is. He writes like a mathematician stating a proof and in the end becomes boring.

There is nothing of his, as a result, that stands out as being truly brilliant.

Read Dune by Frank Herbert for a brilliant sci fi experience and almost anything by Arthur C Clarke.

Finding a mature partner in a foreign land??

I tried to mail you to tell you but I was blocked!!

Finding a mature partner in a foreign land??

Well now I didn't mean foreign in that sense...it was supposed to be a global comment...ie wherever you are in the world. My point was that if you are abroad, then unless you are a good native language speaker, the available complement is diminished making it even harder to find a good match.

Anyway, just being in the EU doesn't make you European any more than being in NATO makes you American. We are entitled to be here, but it isn't England if you understand what I mean....It is a stand alone country with its own history, language and characteristics??....ie Foreign.

Finding a mature partner in a foreign land??

What a very pleasant thought...thank you!!

All's not lost Ray.... As a last resort, I could be your cougar and your could be my toyboy

Finding a mature partner in a foreign land??

Has anyone ever considered the problems that middle aged and older people have finding a woman(or man) after finding oneself alone in a relatively foreign place...to explain...I am in Spain looking to start a new life....my wife hated it and after many disagreements we decided to end our marriage...she went back to the UK...I stayed put. Now I'm 60 years old...I can't just chat up a 60 year dolly bird in a pub can I? And where would I find a 60 year old dolly bird anyway?

I'm no old fogey and 'social activities'....bowling or bridge or other clubs or worse....don't really appeal to me. On top of that, I haven't got time to mess about.....If I try to take my time I'll be an OAP before I've got an invite for supper!!

Dating sites are generally a con. This one is very good and free...but....there are not that many women in my region so the odds of finding Nirvana are pretty long.....

So who has a good solution??
